Since the change of season and Fall are upon us and Fall, I would like to put together some effects for a kindergarten show using a change of season theme that incorporates leaves that change color, change of weather, Apples, hybernation, etc. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Michael

A good silk fountain would make a nice opener, perhaps?
The Sun and the Moon is a nice Kindergarten Run Rabbit/dice box effect.
Silk Rainbow Scarf
Rainmaker (Peter Loughran) if you really want to make them laugh!
Instasnow with a TT to transform rain into snow, barehanded. could be used towards the end to signify winter approaching...

It's not quite ready for prime time yet, but my final article for The Wizards' Journal #13 is called "Building a Better Nest," on the subject of magic using Nesting Boxes and other Nesting Containers. One of the effects outlined therein is called "Teddy Bear Hibernation." Briefly, the effect is that your Teddy Bear goes to sleep in the middle of your show and begins to snore. You cover him with a tiny quilt, but he soon vanishes and is nowhere to be found. You and a helper go searching for him and hear his snores coming from a Nest of Boxes, where he is ultimately found asleep on a tiny Teddy-bear-sized bed. The article should be finished by the end of this week.

You could also make a color changing leaf that you pass through your hand, each time changing its color. The leaf starts green, then changes to yellow, then to red, and finally brown. If you want to turn it into a comedy trick, you can pretend to hear someone call out blue, pink or purple and have the leaf change to those colors also. This is easy enough to make from cardboard and construction paper and will be magical for Kindergarten age children.

Potty the Pirate and Spellbinder,

Thank you VERY much for all of your wonderful ideas. I especially like the idea of using a teddy bear hibernation routine and the color changing leaf, although I am not so good at building effects. I suppose anything that changes can be used for this theme. But both your suggestions certainly give food for thought.

I would appreciate any advice as to how to go about building the color changing leaves.

Thank you again for all of your help and courtesy.

Best wishes,

Michael

If your leaves are small enough, you can use a paddle move to accomplish the color changes. Cut four identical small leaf shapes from cardboard. For a paddle stick, cut down a popsicle stick (sometimes called a craft stick in the craft stores) to a size that is easy for you to use with the paddle move. Glue two leaves back to back at one end, and the other two leaves back to back at the other end. The paddle must be thin enough to take the place of the leaf stem. You can color it brown. Color the leaf faces green, yellow, red and brown, one of each color. I assume you can work it out from there. The idea is that when showing (for example) the green/yellow leaf, the red/brown leaf is hidden in your palm.

Love the Teddy Bear Hibernation plot. How about he appears in a nest of boxes made up to look like a Christmas present? Teddy hibernates through the AUTUMN, but wakes up in time for Christmas Day.

Hey, Potty! No fair using your pirate psychic powers to read my e-book before it is published! But I bet you didn't read the part about how I get Teddy's eyes to pop open when he wakes up! You need to either change your tea leaves or buy the e-book!
