WOW ! What a GREAT time we had at the meeting today (despite the air conditioning not working too well!). Maria's show was AWESOME, and inspired so many of the kids. We had about half a dozen members who were brave enough to get up and perform for her after her show, and even our shyest member did the die box for Maria as the meeting was adjourning.
Everyone involved with the SYM should make an effort to give their members a chance to meet our SAM president, as she really has an abillity to connect with the kids. From all of us in Ft. Myers, THANK YOU Maria for making our weekend a magical one !!! Mark Pettey Naples, FL

Greetings -- the thanks should be mine to you for a most marvelous time. I have bragged for years about the SAM in Ft Myers and now I can certainly brag about the SYM there as well.
We arrived Friday evening to the exquisite home of Terry and Sue Harris and were promptly greeted by the every bubbly Gizmo, their adorable pooch who took an instant liking to Jay and myself. Off we were to a delightful dinner at a nearby seafoor restaurant where Terry and Sue wined and dined us in their usual nothing held back manner before heading back to Gizmo's waiting leaps of happiness in the air. The Harris' had made ready what they kiddingly called the "Ibanez Wing" in their home and after some time visiting with each other, it was off to bed for what would be an early morning the following day. The bells went off at 7:00 a.m. and the getting ready began as Gizmo visited and sniffed around trying to find Bugs the bunny and the rest of my flighted entourage. After watching a little bit of Terry's performance on CD, we headed out for a most enjoyable breakfast after which we went to the SYM meeting and my scheduled performance. What a treat! I got to meet Trumpetman, whose real name is Mark, two young members David and Marissa rushed out the car to offer their help and within a few minutes the room was filling up. Shortly before my performance I had an ever bigger surprise, John Cestaro the President of the local Assembly and Richard Payne the Treasurer, both long time friends, showed up all smiles to partake in the happenings. Just when I thought nothing else could happen, the Chaudhuri family showed up with the twins smiling from ear to ear as we hugged each other. The show was well received by the audience and afterwards the members performed for me, from cards to die boxes and a 6 year old, Max, who performed a ball & vase very well, it was indeed a magical morning. Oh, but wait.....it wasn't over yet! Terry and Sue had a special cake made depicting a female magician producing several rabbits out of a hat as the design, then John and Richard presented me with a large check as a donation to the SAM for the scholarship fund. Terry was very emotional and teary as he was presented with a Presidential Citation in recognition for his almost three decades of support of both the SAM and the magic community. Those who were present received a presidential pin along with presidential tokens, a Merlina the Magician pin and autographed posters. After the morning's goings on, we were treated to a very nice lunch and enjoyable conversation with the Harris' and John and Richard before we headed out and down the road back to Miami....Jay and I agreed that this would be one of the very special memories in our memory box of the Presidential year. Thank you each and everyone for making that visit special, unique and memorable. Until next time, keep a dream in the making. Maria Ibanez National President Society of American Magicians |
