I am currently working on my own rope routine and its tegnically pretty much finished but the problem is that I don't have anything really meaningfull or even much funny things to say while doing it. Is there any source that would have some pattern lines or jokes to do in a rope routine. I have much commonly known rope tapes and dvd´s by Tabary, Daryl, pavel and so on but much to my suprise, most of em don't really have anything interesting or funny to say along with their routines. Just now I do this, and then this and that. Of course rope routines are visual enough to be done just like this, but still I would need at least few lines that would help to make it run smoother.

Well without knowing what you are doing in the routine other than rope tricks it is a bit hard to come up with lines for you. And most of the kinds of jokes I use are probably old hack jokes. Example: when introducing my ring and rope routine, I start out saying "This next presentation is called the Ring and the Rope. As you can see I have a ring and a rope. But I don't call it the Ring and the Rope because it uses a ring and a rope, but because title "The Ring and the Rope has such an nice Ring to it" (ok corney as it comes, but gets a laugh and I haven't had to hide behind the table too many times). If you are cutting ends off the rope, you can trim them a couple of times and each time say "I cut off this end, then I cut off this end, and as a result this trick has no end to it"
Use your imagination a little, make a pun or two. I'm sure in Finish my lines wouldn't translate as well, but certainly there are some word plays you can use. Like in English we can use plays on words such as Knot and not. And we can refer to some US idioisms which may not have an equivalent in Finnish, such as running the length of the rope with your hand until you come to the end and say something such as " I've reached the end of my rope" I know Daryl's rope routine has jokes and puns in it, just probably looses something in translating into Finish. Good luck.

That's the problem, most common ones just don't translate into finnish at all.
The basic routine starts with Tabary type thing where ropes end multiply to 4 and then to 2 different ropes, but the method and moves are different. Effect still remains the same and I have it pretty much covered so far. Just basic stuff about what if I had 1 and half rope and so on until I have two ropes and I notice someone not keeping up with it all and for him I start from all over with one single rope. Then I am heading into 2 ends from right hand to left hand thing from Sanders and Daryl routine with the explanation pattern that most use. Then I thought of repeating the effect with "one hand" and other hand in pocket getting me rid of the short piece and allowing the specs to examine the rope at this point. Meanwhile while they examine the long rope I take out other rope that also has small piece and do some short fiber optics type of stunts to get the ends off the rope or maybe even Colombini joke where spectator is asked to tie the ends of the rope together and the ends fall into their hands leaving me the endless rope. I then do some basic rope imitations like Mickey mouse, elton John and some others with the rope in the shape of giant eyeglasses. I do it this way cos I have allways felt that taking ends of the rope and endless loop isn't deceptive, so I thought that spectators maybe cant think that the so called first phase and phase two use same method. Also this second phase gives time for the long rope to be examined and gets me 2 more ropes for professors nightmare if I choose to use it at the end. 3rd phase begins by getting the ropes from phase two for examination and retrieving the long rope back and going into 2-3 phase cut and restored rope phase ala Slydini and Salvano and possibly ending with Danny Korem idea. All phases are extremely clear and don't consume any rope. In first restoration I thought to just tie a knot and move it away from the rope. In second restoration I thought of making a knot and make it jump instantly off the rope and in last phase the cut rope just fuses back together a la Korem (also can be seen on Steve Bedwell tape). Each phase is stronger than other and there is some progression. I can also now finish with professors nightmare if I chose to do so by just retrieving the two ropes from phase two from the audience. In my mind the routine is rather deceptive and easy to follow and it flows rather well. It can be short or long, from 3mins to 10mins, depending on the situation. I can do any phases as stand alone pieces or combine em in pretty much any way I want giving me a lot of leeway. It gets around the parts that annoy me mostly in rope routines that are the exposure of the short piece cos phase 2 where the ends are pulled off is done tongue in a cheek kind of attitude and not very seriously. Also the cut and restored phase is extremely strong and doesn't consume the main ropes at all. So I have some sort of pattern in my head and few jokes but I am just looking for more alternatives and choises. The main problem so far is the cut and restored phase. Why to do it or say in the middle of it? Its effective all by itself but few nice lines in the middle might be nice. Whit Hayden had some nice ones about pixie dust but again, its not really something that can be translated into english. ***, I have a bad habit of writing long posts J-M |

Hi J-M,
Perhaps you could perform your rope routine while telling a story about your experiences as a young Boy Scout learning how to use ropes, not quite getting it right and running into all sorts of problems. Regards, Steve

As you stated, rope routines can be visual enough to stand on their own. So, if you cannot figure out any suitable patter you might want to consider doing your routine to music.

My way may not work for everybody, but I just do it over and over in front of people, and an oral presentation (I hate the word patter, it reminds me of meaningless filler) will develop naturally.

J-M,
You might check out the DVDs of Aldo Colombini. He has some funny lines. Check out Dennis Loomis' Knot routine for some clever lines. In my new book I have my Comedy Rope and Ring Routine which I've honed over the years. You can learn the entire routine or pick out the lines you like. I get consistently good laughs from it. Comedy is something that you have to work on and not everyone can pull it off. I guess I'm finished. Wait, I mean you're Finish Jutellaan toistekin! Larry |

Larry is right you can't go wrong with Aldo, but I don't know is his American humor translates well.

Look at Roland Henning's work on magicvideodepot - you may get a few ideas from him.
