OK, so pretty much it's going to be one of the following:
1) pure mindreading (start fishing and tell them what they saw - that's it). 2) pure suggestion (ask them what they saw, then show the deck is not in the card, and show them the prediction). 3) a mix of both = more of a magic trick than mentalism, really. Thanks for the suggestions on ways to have the subtle outs. The thing I have to take into consideration is that for now I am thinking this up with one very specific person in mind, and I know he's got a scientific mind, and will probably think like I do. The first time I saw Smoke, when I saw the guy (it wasn't Derren) name the card, I immediately guessed the correct method (the first part of it at least). I am afraid that person would think like me, and immediately discover the trick if I live it at that. But when the guy said "well actually that card is not in the deck", then THAT really blew my mind, and I had to watch the video 30 times, thinking it was sleight of hand. Then as I said before the "smoke" reveal left me unimpressed as well. So as strong as I believe the pure mind-reading John Kennedy routine can be for certain specs, I'm not sure that's what I want to do for this person. I really like your idea Marc, and I might just do that... or just turn it into a magic trick, which would still be a lot of fun and pretty impressive IMO But Gabe, on the other hand I have a few friends I am already thinking of, on who the pure mind reading would probably be much more impressive!! I think I have to adapt the act to each type of person I am doing it to. |

The very nature of most of our performances mean that we do adapt our routines slightly for different audiences, I perform at so many varied venues and for many different audiences my effects can change slightly as can my persona.. My ideal persona is where I say very little about how I acheive what I demonstrate, thus being more of a mystery entertainer, but sometimes there is a need to give some kind of rationale be it psychology, suggestion or manipulation..

I don't mean to muddy the water, but Jaime, do you know Luke Jermay's Reverse Gestalt Moment – more popularly known as Forgotten Card? It's not the same effect idea, but something similar and much less "proppy".
By using hypnotic language, NLP and a spritz of nice cologne, you make a subject instantly forget a card she's just seen. Just one, ungafffed deck needed. |

Hi Blackwood. No, I do not know that trick, it sounds very interesting.

A big thumbs-up for Jermay's RGM here, as well. It wouldn't recommend it "instead of the MP deck", but it's certainly a great alternative for the "non-existant" card idea. Keep in mind, the MP deck, if you are starting out, is virtually self-working, whereas Jermay's effect will require more salesmanship, so to speak.

Good point Blackwood, RGM is a lovely bit of business.. I think MP deck is more convincing in that every stage is quite clear and all seems very fair. RGM is however a lovely routine that I have played with and used when the time is right..

Here's a lovely adaptation of the same by Mr. Vanderbeck... which I believe neatly bridges the divide being discussed here..

The routine is designed to lead the spectator to believe the card was never there and has a rather tongue in cheek premise that they have taken hallucinary drugs. The routine has had input from Eugene Burger and Jeff McBride and has been one of my favorite effects for about 5 years (it is tried and tested thousands of times!). I didn't really want to share it but it has been seen by so many magicians who have seen me work in Magic bars and I am hearing that people are already doing it and "improving" on it. |

Another Honorable mention in this type of effect goes to Jay Sankey and Richard Sanders, Thought Thief (When Creators Collide). These type of effects are great, yet Jermays is not always sure fire, and Sankey and Sanders are too ballsy for me. Redford's is an amazing routine. |

If I'm near an internet connection, I ALWAYS combine the MP Deck with Bondoogle:
http://www.krazydad.com/bondoogle/ Here is my routine: "Please think of any one of these cards." "Do you have one? Good." I ask a few questions about their card. "I'm sorry, I don't know what you're thinking of . . . BUT every time I'm looking for an answer I turn to Google." I go to "Google.com" (see above link about method) and I type in google image search "What card is John thinking of?" Google answers . . . The CROWD goes WILD . . . I take a bow. This is my favorite way to perform MP Deck. cheers, Greg Rostami |
