Hi there. I was wondering if anyone could recommend some books or maybe some places a guy could purchase plans for magic tricks and props. I'm new to the forum and would like to find a way to incorporate my woodworking skills into my magic. I think it would be great to do some tricks with things I have hand crafted myself. (besides, I got a few stacks of wood I need to make disappear). John Campbell

If you can find a copy of Science and Mechanics Magic Handbook from the '60s (often comes up for sale on eBay), it has some nice plans for small and large stage items.

Jim Gerrish has a book called "Hardboard and Duct tape Magic" on my web site. It's true, he really does construct most of the props with hardboard and duct tape, but many of the same plans can be used to construct props using fine woods, screws, glues, and what-not. Some of our customers tell us that they used the plans to make a quick mock up in hardboafrd and duct tape, and then converted the models to more substantial materials. Others find that the Hardboard and Duct Tape props are sturdy enough to last for years and stand on their own. However, it might get you thinking and that's the whole idea.

Another source would be MUM magazine, as all the issues seem to have woodworking plans for various stage props. Of course, you'd have to be a member of SAM first to get the subscription. An alternative would be to borrow the magazines from a friend who belongs to SAM and see if you can build them from the plans provided.
If I'm not mistaken, Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic also has some plans for some props that you can build in the back of the book.

Hi,
Similar to John's request I am also looking for a good souce of plans. I am more specifically looking for magic devices, illusions, or gimick plans that are in the round and can be wood. This is not the large stage but more the parlour magic like the ball and vase. I specialize in woodturning and have lots of beautiful burl wood. |

I will second the mentions above. Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic is likely going to be the easiest book to put your hands on, and it has many different, easy-to-build props detailed, although the S&M Magic Handbook contains what are more like real workshop plans.
For someone with reasonable woodworking skills, drawing up your own set of plans should pose little problem. Of course you must already know how a prop works. Start with something simple so that construction details will be less likely overlooked. Papasmurf... you need to get your hands on an old Thayer catalog if you want real inspiration for your turning skills. ~michael

Thank you very much Mr. Baker.
I am going to hunt this book down now. It is great being a member of the Magic Café for responses like this. salute, Eric |
