Tapping or Rapping Hand Fans…
If you’re doing Halloween close-up or séance work, I’ve found a pretty cool substitute for an expensive (and rare) rapping Spirit Hand. Made by the guys who make Tabman’s Tables, It will not fit everyone’s style, nor is it high-tech in operation, however for a mere $125 including shipping, it’s a bargain in today’s high-priced magic market. It is a “Thayer style” rapping hand but with the twist of being a SKELETON hand. The “board” is nicely crafted of wood with little feet and a black suede-material top. The hand looks much like those used in med school, but for the true bizarrist could use a little shadow and dirt make-up to age the prop. They send along a nice story with the hand formerly belonging to famous magic inventor Dr. Hofzinser and include photos of the chap minus his right hand, but for the séance worker the prop may be made better use of in the traditional way. The hand being skeletal is obviously not gimmicked and may be passed around the table. Especially for the low price I thought it was a very well fashioned prop. Anyway, check it out for yourself at: http://tabmantables.com/hofzinserhand.html I was very pleased with this purchase for “everyday” use, though I still need to have a custom hand built for my historical séance. My magical two-cents. Walt |

Wow -- I'm *very* intrigued. I've wanted a good rapping hand for ages, and this is the only one that fits my tiny budget.
So you're pleased with the workmanship and so on? I've never bought any Tabman products, but I have heard them praised. Rory

I can vouch for Ray's work. He did a custom piece for me that we will be using this weekend. If you're ordering something from him, expect a durable, functional, and good-looking prop!

This is kinda very tempting. I follow Burger's one rap and only one rap theory.
How is the sound of that one rap with those bony fingers Walt? |

Looks very nice. I like this. I want this. Rap once for "Halloween-October" discount?
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

What is the sound of one hand rapping?
Seriously, that is a really nice prop. I like the idea of a skeletal hand. Another item in the wish box.... Bill

The "rapping" of the hand sounds good,
that's because it's not only caused by the "hand" but by the mechanism that controls the movement. And I agree less IS more, I would not have the hand tap out an entire card number for instance. I would also take time to build suspense and not let the rapping begin before it's time. This prop needs theatre and story to work effectively. If you can even find an Owen hand these days you're going to spend about ten times the cost of this prop! They don’t mass produce these so don’t cry to me when they’re out’a stock… Magically, Walt |

Thanks so much Walt.
I ordered and it arrived remarkably fast in only two days. Really nice folks to deal with. I'm very happy with the device. Very well made. After a suspenseful build I will only need it to move once. I was extremely pleased about the hands ability to swivel and turn slightly. I was hoping I could get the hand to lift up, turn and then fall seeming to grasp an old deck of cards placed on the corner of the board...and I am delighted to report it does just that. Thanks again Walt, may your "magical two-cents" multiply! |

Mine arrived today. Really, really nice. And fast service. Can't wait to cook up just the right routine and spook some people.
Happy Hallowe'en, all. Rory

...Good idea about the shadow and dirt... looks too clean... Add a bit of some linen tattered cloths... Add an aged Scarab Ring...mummy hand!
The Hand of Ra-Ka-Tep.... Hmmm... Yes my wife will kill me soon (so that there will be some money left before Halloween)....

I like really like this under priced product. It is a lovely theatrical prop for the storytellers out there.
And to answer the question several of you inquired...there is no invisible thread work involved. It is old school and a charming artifact. Walt is a shopping guru. I would not have found it otherwise. |

Nice touch with a ring and all.
For those still thinking about this.. The skeleton hand DOES have visible wiring and hinges/springs, as this is how they "hook" together one for scientific and med-school study. So I still say AGE the darn bones, but if you do toooooo much, you'll have to explain away the metal parts that make sense as is. Another two-cents, Walt |

I have to find the link - but there was a site that explained how to fleshify anatomical skeletons with various products..i.e. altex mixes etc...Just mild coats to add dissecated flesh look... I figure aging the bones and adding some dried flesh effects, then some linen and the Scarab ring will cloak things up nicely
(Also, one can pop the ring off for other effects)... Thanks again Walt - This was a really good tip!

I would tie it into Jim's ring effect from the Arcana of Bizarre Magick, great introduction for the prop, and then use it for the rapping hand portion of performance/demonstration.

And Jim better release the Arcana for Halloween (sorry Tony ).....!!!!
But since a version of the effect is in Midnight in the Dark Museum - Yep, Jim is a Genius - more than Wiley Coyote, even!

Mine arrived today - my wife wants to kill me "WHAT ARE ALL THESE PAAACCKKKAAGGGEESS>..."
But its Halloween, dear, tis but once a year..... A beautiful piece.... The table is a thing of beauty as well.... I think I might use it as a regular close up table for some effects.... and the hand is nice and eerie but as the Wise Walt mentioned... a bit to clean... I will mummify the thing and get on an Imhotep ring on it.... Love the methodology too... so nice.... as Eddie said... Old School!

Used this (with my aged hand) last night, and was the talk of the evening.
Even at a lavish costume party with a haunted dungeon and gouls everywhere, the little hand moving by unseen forces sent chills! Remember when you do it, less is more, though. Magically, Walt |

FYI - I used this device to hand out candy last night to the little kids.... It was a big hit.... The tray was littered with chocolate bars etc. and as they reached for loot, the hand would pop up and wave.... Sometimes it would warn to take only two items... Sometimes it would indicate take more.... Funny thing is all the little kids went "COOOOOLLLL" and some even grabbed the hand off the table... (The amazing thing about this and the method is that the person can grab it!!! and it appears nothing was connected to it...) One little 2 year old wanted the hand more than the candy.....
So many uses for this amazing device!!!
