Well Jaz, I think the fundamentals of magic is your whole list, but for children I think concentrating on technique, misdirection and making it as fun as possible for them. Then as they progress slowly introduce presentation and communication skills. Then start concentrating on theory when they get a bit older.
I know for the actual effects they will concentrate on slight of hand, this way illusions, TT wont be ruined for them. I was a bit older when my father started to teach me he started me of with simple rope tricks and the sponge balls, I think working on the manipulation with balls, coins and cards they would be better off in the long run. I have an 11 year old son, who I'm teaching. I keep it structered and he calls them magic lessons. I tried in the begining letting him learn things of interest, but learned quickly that most things he chose were way too hard for him to grasp. Now I give him set lessons, he's used to this from school. He has homework as well and brings his results to the next lesson. Every now and then he puts together a mini show and we work on that. I'm also teaching him acting techniques and stagecraft as well.
The most important things with teaching anyone is to keep it interesting and to teach at their level and not your own. Once we master a thing it becomes normal, but to a person new to a thing, it can seem impossible and can put them off. I have taught drama and music to different ages and am now finding that magical teaching is just the same and I'm having a lot of fun. He's coming along very well. Cheers Phil |
