The above link is to the motorcycle shadowbox that David Copperfield uses. Ignore the box, I'm focused on those light bulb wands the girls have. Are these available anywhere? Can they be built? Do they need cords or could they run off of battery power? Ideas?

PVC pipe with a standard fixture on the end. It's like making a floor lamp without a base.
You don't need such sharp, clear light for the initial part of the illusion. Flourescent tubes would work as well. Battery powered light sabres (Star Wars Variety) would work and would add some color to a normally black and white illusion. Don't imitate- innovate.

Yes, you can get the battery powered light sabres in a small size (not extendable). We used to sell them on the holiday camp, although I'm not sure where they initially came from.
