We were having a lot of discussions around the house about the possibility of using YouTube as a marketing tool.
On the one hand, anything you upload to YouTube, if it has any merit will likely be copied by someone. This was a big negative. After some sober thought (occaissionally this occurs) we decided that this probably won't be a problem. Our market is not overlapped by too much competition and if someone on the other half of the continent so chooses to copy, then so be it. The upside was that now when potential clients called and asked, "What exactly do you do?" we can now link them to the appropriate routine(s) for them to preview. Since we offer many types of shows, this seems to be a good way to relating audience specific material. We do have a very well shot promo video but it is a compilation of only some of the shows we do. At times it wasn't working telling the potential client, "The part where we are wearing....is along the lines of what we would be offering you. Other means, ie verbal, did very often make the sale, but now we just e mail them a link to seal the deal if they ask for specifics. We have only had the new clips up a few days and they have already proven successful as a marketing tool. It is something you may want to consider. All the best, Rob |

I think it is essential to have a video link and youtube is a great way. My lack of a youtube video is my lack of knowledge how to technically get the video uploaded.

Rob,
If you do link a video to youtube- make sure you 'disable user comments.' This will prohibit people from leaving rude, stupid, and downright senseless comments about your video. You'd be surprised how much little 'Timmy' knows about magic-- and just wants the world to know how you did that one trick! That's the only downfall to youtube magic performances. Hope this helps some, best regards, Matt

I have had downloadable videos on my website for a while. I recently made them YouTube streaming videos to a) help with my bandwidth and b) allow anyone download them. it saves having WMV, Quicktime, Real etc... in various sizes.
I have them http://www.conman.com.au |

Matt,
That's sounds like good advice and I wasn't aware I could do that. (YouTube is new to me.) Fortunately though, the ratings and comments to date have been very good. However, I will definitely keep it mind. There was one comment however, that was inappropriate and nothing to do with the performance and I discovered that I could delete that rather easily. You DO NOT want to use “You Tube”... why? Because when a YOU Tube Video is over, it allows the viewer (Your audience) to choose OTHER videos and take then AWAY from your site and video. (there MAY be a way to turn that feature off... but) you are better off with Google (even though that are BOTH owned by Google) Google Videos does NOT do this AND Google video has less of s 'footprint' o the video itself as well...
Of course the very best is to use a 'real' (NOT the company) video player on your own site that has no links or distractions away fro your site and the influence process... Hi Dean,
Putting up videos on YouTube is free and easy. Adding them to my web site is costly. I can also change or edit my YouTube videos at will. There is no link to YouTube on my site. I only direct clients to YouTube who inquire about "What specifically do you do?" In this sense, it has so far proven worthwile. All the best, Rob |

Do you think that hosting your video on YouTube positions you as a less professional performer, because it indicates you can't afford to host it on your own site? (I liken it to the concept of having a free site, with other people's banner ads all over it.)
Do you think it also weakens your marketing position, because you end up grouped with lots of less professional performers there? There is a lot of junk in that place. Is it a banner of pride that you are on YouTube, or a banner of shame? I have no answer, but it's food for thought. BTW, has anyone mentioned that you lose ownership of your video, by hosting it there? - Donald

Donald is right on here!
Rob, I am NOT saying that YouTube is not a "possibility", and AM saying that You Tube is no the best solution based on YOUR question. You CAN still win ALL the advantages of Your Tube with none of the money loosing, marketing distractions by using Google... still free, still easy, still all the stuff you like about You Tube with-out any of the marketing mis-haps. Heck, it’s even owned by the same company! YOU posed the question, I was just trying to HELP by serving up a better solution for the same FREE price-tag. Use it or not, but YOU ASKED, we answered. Just trying to HELP. Thinking of YOU and Your Success! I am at your service and In HIS Service, Deano (Helping You Succeed) in Reno <><

Too, you can set your GOOGLE account to "PRIVATE" so none of your other concerns have to weigh on you any longer IF you choose to use Google... Looks like the PERFECT solution to me based on your shares.

Guys,
I appreciate the input. Thank you. However used in the context for which I intended it, YouTube seems to be working all right for me as an option for one small part of my marketing. It doesn't bother me that other people may or may not watch any video I put there. This has little or no effect on my working or not. Clients aren't shopping for me on YouTube. Clients do find me from my web site (I have a professional web site with a professional promo video), my web site links, direct marketing etc.... I can then link them directly to a YouTube video IF I CHOOSE. I don't think it lessens me in their eyes if I have videos posted there. And if it does, then I'm not the performer for them, I can't please everyone. It doesn't bother me that viewers can rate or leave comments. I have discovered that I can edit these, if I choose. However, if a viewer leaves a 5 star rating and an extremely positve response, (which has happened) then it is in my interest to leave it up. Perhaps I am stunted when it comes to technology. I am not up on all the possiblities, and I really don't want to be. I only have access to dial up (no other option exists where I live, I have tried) and uploading a 5 minute video takes 9 to 11 hours. So, I think I'll just stick to my YouTube option for now. Having said all that, your input is very valuable and perhaps someone else reading this thread will be able to incorporate it to good use. I hope so. Dean and Donald, you both have experience in trying to help people improve their business practices and sharing it is very generous of you. That is one of the positive aspects of these forums. All the best, Rob |

Perhaps a quick case study is appropriate here.
Raymond Crowe is widely known in Australia as an incredible performer. But little known elsewhere in the world. His youtube performance is uploaded around the 20th of August this year. A handful of people see it and send it to friends. I checked this morning and the primary version of it( there are many copies of it) has been viewed 462,000 times. (about 10,000 per day) Directly because of this he is asked to do a Royal Variety Show, The letterman show, ellen, and is offered work all over the planet. we live in interesting times http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKoiMiOQvMc shadow clip http://youtube.com/watch?v=KenJ75qyMPE tv story timothy |

I AGREE that "IF" you (and your video) want to be seen outside of your own site, YouTube is likely "THE" spot second maybe to MySpace… fine. Heck, just look to a "Daniel Chesterfield" who got the international Hummer account as a result of his silly video posted o YouTube and beyond? Certainly there is more inherent traffic at places like that than most could ever direct to their own site even with the best SEO money can buy... and definitely a nice side benefit "IF" that is what you intend, but unless I missed something, "oranges and apples" here.
YES, YouTuble, MySpace, Google and all the rest of the internet 'free-for-all' sites can add to your bottom line exposure, each can (and SHOULD) be used appropriately for it’s own advantages... fine. The question is that IF you choose theses to specifically direct you prospective buying audience is it a good idea to send them to a place (even imbedded in your own site) that is a complete DISTRACTION to the booking and buying process (since THAT is what we were talking about as I understood it) when we spend so much time, talent and treasure in capturing that 'prospective' buyer only to give them everyone else (and beyond) the same chance at distracting your potential buyer with a zillion other video and take then AWAY for the perspective BUYING process. - - Defiantly NOT good marketing! It's just counter intuitive and anti productive to the long term success in the influence process... that's all. Otherwise, I say have FUN with all the YouTubeing (or what-ever) you want. Just clearly a completely different applications for the most effective RESULTS, is all. Thinking of YOU and Your Success! I am at your service and In HIS Service, Deano (Being Effective) in Reno <><

Thanks Dean for the encouragement.
Hey Timothy, Although my purpose for putting videos on YouTube was not in expectation of being "discovered," I too have a story similar to yours to share. In the early 1990's one of my agents used to team me up with the same comics on tours quite often. We worked well together and got along off stage as friends as well. At that time, I was doing a lot more stand-up magic as opposed to the stage performances that Pat and I do today. One of these other comics that I worked a lot with, grew tired of the grind and gave up performing to work behind the scenes at a Toronto television station. One day I received a call from him and asked if I could do a 7 minute spot on one of the variety shows aired by the station. This was one of my first television spots and I jumped at the chance and enjoyed doing it. Jump ahead a couple of years and I heard rumours that this ex-comic had now decided to give performing another try (it is in our blood, I think). I had not talked to him in months but heard that he put together a niche act and took it to England for a go (we are from Canada). A clip of part of his performance was posted to YouTube (or some other type of public access site, I don't really know which one). It received hundreds of thousands of hits. Jump ahead to today, this comic now sells out stadiums around the world often doing multiple shows to accomodate the demand(he is currently on a world tour just finishing in England and heading to South Africa). FOX TV has recently signed him to develop a sit com which hopefully will be airing within the year. He has come a long way from our days of performing in no name bars and comedy nights often driving 8 to 10 hours between gigs for relatively little money and a motel room. Since he re-entered comedy, it turns out we share the same agent again (not our original one) although we no longer work together on the same shows (ooh how I wish!). Hi name, is Russell Peters. If you have not heard of him, you will. All the best, Rob |

The bad thing about youtube is what dean said, it directs the client off your site and leads them to other videos.
But, some clients will ask you do you have a video on line, youtube, myspace etc.... ? You should have them on yoursite as well as YOUTUBE.... Some clients are youtube fans and love it..... So, I think a combo of both is great....

I am not a fan as a practice to put things up on places like You Tube.
Why? Simple. You said it yourself it is free and it it is costly to put it on your site. Do you not think the clients you direct to You Tube know this? Having it on your web page is cost of doing business and in all reality is not that expensive. Why direct them to another site where they can see LOTS of others? Heck when your video pops on You Tube it will give them similar ones to look at! In my view you have taken the time and expence to direct them to YOUR WEB PAGE, what on earth would make me want to direct them to another web page prior to getting the sale? Just an opinion. In all fairness I don't use the web to market as my target market does not require it but this is how I see it.

Many valuable comments posted by many knowledgeable folks already!
I agree with The Dean and Danny in that you should have your video on your own site. When they are watching your video, they are ON your site with nowhere else to go. Plus, you have photos, text, testimonials and all the other good stuff for them to read while watching and after watching your video. It is all right there, with nothing else to distract them. And Danny's absolutely right about cost. It isn't expensive at all to host video on your site. Right now, I pay $8/month for FIVE separate websites (that's $8 TOTAL, not per site!). I get 100 GB of bandwidth each month. I use a lot of bandwidth: I run a video production business, hosting videos on my site both publicly and privately (for clients to view on private pages) and I have only hit that bandwidth limit a few times. And even then, extra bandwidth is dirt cheap. Face it, we are magicians with a MODEST number of people watching a relatively short video. We do NOT have the bandwidth issues that YouTube, ABC, FOX or any other major site has to worry about. They've got millions of hits a DAY! As far as uploading videos when you've got dialup, here's an easy solution. Copy it to a laptop, go to Starbucks, pay $5 for an hour of WiFi access, and upload it in two minutes. And don't forget to sit back and enjoy a nice cup of coffee while doing so! That being said, I still think you should ALSO have PORTIONS of your video on YouTube... as a teaser. This will draw people who find you on YouTube to your site. You want to have exposure in as many places as possible... BUT... you want people to end up on YOUR SITE. This is why I think you should have a teaser video only on YouTube. Almost like a trailer. Something that will get their interest. Plus, the link in the YouTube description will do two things. First, it will give them a way to find you. Second it will give Google a way to find your site easier. Google places inbound links to your site very highly and links to your site from YouTube (owned by Google, as said earlier) will help your ratings. Good Luck! Scott |

I hadn't considered that but I suppose it could be a factor. I don't think embedding a youtube video on your page looks anywhere near as bad as a banner-ridden site or a dodgy web address, though. I wonder what percentage of customers would actually think like that. I have had a youtube video on my site for a couple of weeks and have had a great response from it but I was also surprised that I got a couple of enquiries straight from youtube which presumably means there must be some people out there actually using the youtube search function to actively seek out magicians with videos.
