Figured that this would be the place to post for this item. I have only seen it on Hocus-Pocus.com and not much anywhere else. Could someone please advise or comment/review this prop and effect.
I posted under this section b/c I do believe it has to do with voodoo. I currently own quite a few of Alan's products and have great response BUT I am not too sure if this will fit into my repetoire except for of course this time of year. Here is a comment from the site: "From the creative mind of Alan Wong, (who has created such modern day magical classics such as, "Stargazer" and "Wonder Pet") comes this delightfully spooky routine that can be presented as comedy, bizarre, or anywhere in between. Strawman is your own personal voodoo doll which you have total control over and he is ready to cast his spell over your audience. He will come to life and stands up on his own in the palm of your hand. When covered by a mysterious black cloth he will jump up from the table, by his own powers, untouched by human hands. Alan Wong along with Steve Marshall have created a great piece of close-up wierdness that will really give your audiences the chills. In stock and ready for shipping for all your Halloween gigs. Comes complete with Strawman, Magic Cloth and complete spooky instructions...." Thanks in advance for any input or help. CHEERS, JPV

Sounds like a classic voodoo doll (ie. standing pencil illusion), mixed up with a little bit of a zombee. Sounds like a great idea!

...Or that! I'm going to use my "The Thing" with the straw voodoo doll to have his soul show itself, or something to that effect.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like something I may just have to purchase then, I can use it in those "special" occasions when they arise. Probably not enough time to get proficient for Halloween......

I have used the standard Voodoo doll for the past couple of years during Halloween. I have been planning on getting Wickerman, which I believe is a large version. I had not heard about Strawman. I'll have to check it out.

Maybe its because of my attachment to The Wicker Man, the Okito Voodoo Doll, and U.F. Grant's floating pencil, but I always felt the beauty of the effect, in any form, was the simplicity of the method and the lack of things like a cloth or other apparatus that look so much like other floating / animation effects.
Again, I had a strange obsession with the basic effect since I was 11, so much so that it led me to create the stage-sized version, so I suppose it's just my own thoughts. |

Dear all,
Strawman is indeed a classic Okito Vodoo doll made out of straw and copper wire at the joints so it is a very sturdy piece that looks classical. It fits perfectly in the palm and easy to carry around. The assessories are all custom made for a dramatic purpose. You bring out a black velvet bag and inside is a black cloth wrapping around the strawman. The cloth is a glorpy and the tailor made size will make it looks like the strawman stands up on its own under the cloth after it left your hand. There is a 8 page instruction booklet woth color photos written by Steve Marshall one of the writers for MUM. You are buying a professional working routine not just a straw doll. Steve actually performs this in his restaurant work and got great reactions. You can get this from Hocus Pocus, Joe Stevens or directly from me. It will take no longer than 30 minutes to learn and do the trick convincingly well. If you have other versions of the voodo doll, you can jump right into performing it without any problem. Cheers Alan
If you cannot win, make the one ahead of you break the record.
