I’ve read the threads about the effect here at the café
But haven’t seen much about the various manufactures.

Even as a new guy on the block I’ve been burned enough
with names that “seem” to be the same trick but are not.

One is sometimes the original, and other(s) is/are a cheap
rip off. Price doesn’t always indicate which one is better.

But with a price range from 19.95 to 39.95 (and higher)
and names like:

“astro sphere” by Sadik & CO

“astrosphere” by Sorcery Manufacturing

and others.

Who has these ?

Which is the best?

Are there quality differences in the ball?

Quality differences in the handkerchief/silk?

Differences in handling?

In other words which one “floats your boat”.

As a self-proclaimed floating ball aficionado and expert
here at the Café I gotta say...
The SBC Floating Ball by Rings & Things II
is the Mercedes Benzes of this version of the floating ball,
the sphere is metal not plastic, the weight and balance are perfect,
but in any version I'd replace the see-through foulard
with something more elegant and pliable.
Magically,

Walt is right about that. Rings & Things II makes a truly fine product and their floating ball is no exception. It's probably the best made.

There is a Germain made version that is very interesting, and has somewhat different rigging, but I can't remember the name at the moment. I'll try to find out.

You'll be safe the the R&SII Version and it will last a lifetime if properly cared for.

Thanks for the comments, it does help.

I have a rather large order in with RNT2.
When they get caught I'll order their floating ball.
I am also looking forward to seeing their re-released Zombie Ball.

I did get to see one of the see-through foulards from "brand-x" and I would
have to agree that it would need to be replaced. It looked more
like something that would be part of a Halloween costume.
Rather cheap looking and very rough and rigid.

I just got an Astrosphere from Sorcery Mfg., it's about 5". Is this size big enough to use on stage like an Okito or Don Wayne floating ball? What type and color thread should be used? Or, should I just fork out the money and get the Don Wayne Floating Ball for stage?

Thanks,

Dale

Here is a post of mine from a year ago:

If you still have your Astrosphere...

Toss that ugly cloth & thread hookup....useless.

Get this thread:

http://www.thatthreadshop.com/sulkyinvisible.htm

Get the "Smoke" color, then get this book, Invisible Thread Manual - Ralph Wichmann :

http://www.hanklee.org/xcart/product.php?productid=6140

Then buy a 24 - 36" sheer scarf from JC Penney or a women's accessories store (the mall), and you will have the best Astrosphere routine EVER!

The One-Point hookup is what I use...I start with the cloth, the ball moves up, over, and behind the cloth...up & over to the front...then I DROP THE CLOTH...the ball moves to the floor, then up to the left hand...then s-l-o-w-l-y to the right hand.

I'm told it's MUCH spookier than the Zombie, which I also perform from time to time.

Hope this helps!

Doug
