I highly recommend you check out Mark Strivings' book, Mobile Mentalism, or his video WAM (Walk Around Mentalism) highlighting his favorites from that book.
Both resources contain nothing but the sort of material you're looking for, and include effects collected from such respected names in mentalism as Webster, Hilford, Urban, and Riggs. The book is available from hocus-pocus.com; the video can be purchased from floraco.com.

Flourish Dude, I recommend that you first look up on the differences between magic, mental magic and mentalism.

Matias, what makes you think he doesn't know the difference? Nothing he wrote contained any contradictions. The name "flourish dude", the icon and the other topics he has been active in. In addition, someone with a clear understanding of the difference between the areas would probably not have to ask the original question. ...or just call me psychic. Please, fourishdude, understand that it is a sincere suggestion, not an insult or so in any way. I was too lazy to post it, but now Michael made me answer again, so here's a link to a perhaps little clearer explanation of what I'm getting at; http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......tart=0#6 /Matias |

Larry Becker's "Stunners! Plus" is subtitled "The Mental Magic of Larry Becker." Banachek mentioned in Magic Café when he was guest of honor, that he uses the word "magic" as one of many descriptors of his presentation. Anneman's Book is "Practical Mental Magic." Ted Lesley combines what most would describe as magic with what most would describe as mentalism in his act. I fully understand the distinction that some in the field like to draw among magic, mental magic, and mentalism, but it is by no means a unanimous position. Some refer to it as mentalism, some as mental magic, some simply as "magic" and some, to my expressed chagrin, even refer to it as a religious experience.
I don't think you need to know, care about, or believe in, the difference in order to do an entertaining strolling routine. Neil's reference to Mark Strivings' work is a great place to start. Good luck, and have fun!

Let's stay to the question.
When I perform mental "magic" it come's more to the patter. So if the lay-people are willing to listen, as is in Close-Up or parlor situations, the illusion can and will happen. But for strolling I think it needs to be fast and sometimes without patter just because it's to noisy (or is this a magician thinking?). What do you do in these cases? When I started with mentalisme I was still booked to perform strolling and table hopping magic at partys, just because the agents knew me that way. Sometimes after the show people came to me just for a chat. So I knew these people were interested and then I started to do mental. And ... then they realy freaked out. |

To answer the first question, Psychokinetic Time is a great strolling effect. So is spoon bending and psychological forces.

My own (not surprisingly) favourite is Flash Squared, a repeatable version of the magic square that was specifically designed for walk-around performace. It has the nice side effect of leaving each participant with your business card, without the suggestion that you are "handing out cards".

Cornelius,
My apologies, but I really don't agree that PK Time, spoon bending, and psychological forces are appropriate for a magician who just wants something "fast and easy" for strolling. These all strike me as better suited to the needs and abilities of an experienced mentalist. Once again, I strongly recommend the Strivings materials as a solid place to find strolling material suitable for a range of abilities, with a tip of the hat to Doug's shamelessly self-promotional recommendation (that reminds me -- I do need to get his booklet).

Mr. Tobin,
I see your point. For a serious mental worker, PK time, psychological forces, etc would be of good value. Thank you. I do believe that these are of no value to a magician. From, Cornelius. |

I love spoon bending, and the publuic eats it up! I just came from watching my buddy perform magic at a nightclub out here. He had some good stuff, but everyone loves spoon bending, and throw 6-12 spoon in a fanney pack or pocket, and you can stroll ALL night, and the bent/twisted spoons make great souveniers....

John,
Practical Mental Magic I believe was originally published as Practical Mental Effects - When printed by Dover it became Practical Mental Magic. Dover are known for their cheap mass-market publications so the decision was probably made on marketing grounds rather than any informed decision on its contents. When mentalism isn't in vogue it is often similarly labelled as magic to appeal to a larger market. I believe Ted Lesley performs magic and mentalism but keeps them separate, although Ted is free to correct me if I'm wrong as I have unfortunately not been able to make it to Germany to see him perform. I would concede you do make a valid point though, that you don't *have* to be performing mentalism to do wonders with a mental edge to be entertaining. I don't believe, however, that Matias is saying its impossible to be entertaining performing magic or mental magic - only that presentationally is just aint mentalism. I would agree. -- ws |

I work family restaurants and birthday partys. I was asked to work a bar type walk around gig. I also have 3 marti gras type events comming up. I have found that a lot of people ages 21-30ish like the Mental type magic. My stack deck and deep astonishment worked very well that night. So the qeustion came about looking for more of these type effects that I can do walk around for this group. For walk around I like my effects to be fast and easy. I guess I should of made that clear. These niceties might be fun (and even useful) to discuss in other contexts, but aren't necessary to help the original poster find entertaining stolling material. So far, I think the referral to Mark Strivings' is the most helpful. I've not seen Flash Squared but my guess is that if Doug puts it out, it's worth learning. It occurs to me that a couple of the effects in The Osterlind Breakthrough System, especially "Cards to Pocket" could be done quickly and "on the run" with little or no modification. Go for it flourish dude!

My ESP Act will be published in two places. It will be found in my new book, Maximum Mind Control, and it will be on my DVD, Fundamentalism.
