I had someone tell me he wouldn't let me hypnotize him because on the Flintstones, Barney got stuck in hypnosis and acted like a chicken.

Didn't Dick Van Dyke do a show where he got stuck in hypnosis or had a post-hypnotic suggestion that every time the phone rang, he'd act drunk?
I also seem to recall an episode of "Greatest American Hero" when Ralph made his FBI partner, Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp) do something strange every time he heard the word "scenario".

So much for lightening anyone's mood. I didn't realize this would bring up such emotion.
I am well aware of the fact that for the unenlightened many think this is what hypnotism is. I personally have spent a great deal of time educating people as to what hypnosis is and what isn't. Whether anyone likes it or not, yes, we still are overcoming these sorts of things. For many years hypnosis has been used as a way to tie loose sections of the plots of movies and TV shows together. Has anyone on this form already knows, hypnosis is so much more and anyone who was a practitioner, also must be an educator. For me, that old cartoon, is so far afield of what this actually is, that it is laughable. Yet for a good many people, things along these lines, including if you are a certain age, reruns of the old Superman show, and Too many other examples to be illustrated here, are stereotypes of what we must overcome. For a great many years, movies from the nineteen thirties and forties, many out of Europe, that have severely misrepresented hypnosis as well, usually with a malicious bent. Woody Allen who once said rather derogatory things about performers of stage hypnosis, has since used this as a vehicle in several of his movies. It's my guess that he somewhat fascinated by it. From my experience personally, there are some people are walking around who are afraid until they see a friend undergo the process in which case they clamoring to be the next one hypnotized. Is only by showing that we're kind, caring, and responsible people in the practice of hypnotism that will over time disspell these media myths. For life and us as human beings, are so much more than movies, silly TV shows and even cartoons. |

Many of the "hypnosis" shows that I remember were done in a sort of tongue-in-cheek manner to get a laugh. In those cases, the "hypnosis" was used as a means to an end, for humor's sake.

And that's the way it should always be: in a tongue-in-cheek manner, for humor's sake. Unless of course you are a certified hypnotist, and use it for medical purposes

In my clinical Hypnosis sessions, lots of humor and personality = great rapport.
Same with the shows. When Hypnotizing, very serious. Skill, inspiration, and success, drawn from all that I'm doing and have experienced. |
