I share a hometown with DEL RAY.. Pittsburgh, PA. Most of the time, when I tell other magicians I am originally from Pittsburgh, it's a matter of time before they ask me about Del Ray... he is an enigma and a legend in Pittsburgh magic and around the world... and the first thing anyone asks is where they can see video of the man performing.
FINALLY, AN OFFICIAL DVD is apparantly available with over 100 min of performance only material on Del Ray. I just got a note minutes ago from Tom Peiritsh, owners of Pittsburgh's magic shop "The Cuckoo's Nest" announcing the new Del Ray DVD. I have no affiliation with the DVD or the magic shop, or any benefit whatsoever from it's sales. I was just excited to see it being released, and thought I'd pass on the info here to everyone else who may never have seen Del Ray in front of an audience, or those who have and want to remember.... STO ALLEVIATE CONFUSION ON THE WORD "OFFICIAL" ABOVE...
Since there is no easy way to edit posts here on teh amgic Café, I just wanted to point out the wording about "OFFICIAL DVD", are my bad choice of words and not from the DVD or Ads. Someone emailed me asking how this is considered official, and I realized my bad choice of words. I only meant official in the sense of a "professionally marketed dvd" as opposed to something underground or running on you tube. The DVD looks great, but I have no idea who the producer is, or if they use the word "Official" or not. The link I provided is to the cuckoo's nest -- magic retailer who first alerted me to the DVD being in stock -- not the producer of the dvd. -- Nick

Is this material public domain material that has merely been professionally authored onto DVD? Or, if not public domain material, is this a DVD of copyrighted material that meets, conforms to and satisfies all applicable copyright laws that might apply?
Also, what is the video quality of this Del Ray material? Is this material professionally shot (no pun intended) material or is this merely the same (or similar) poor video quality material that has been making the rounds these past many years? And as Sean Macfarlane asked, "is this the dvd of him at NY country club?? Or another one?" Thanks for the answers to the foregoing questions. Mike

I was very fortunate to have signed with the same talent ageny that Del had when I was about 16yrs old. I met Del at a Country Club he was hired to do, John(owner of the agency) and I went there to see Del and talk shop..I will never forget that moment.

I'm not sure if any of the video questions are directed to me since I started the thread, or to the magic community at large.
If me.. I have no info on the dvd other than what I posted, I have not seen it yet. Just passing on info I received that it is now in stock. I believe it is produced by Murphy's Magic according to the logo on the DVD. So I'd assume the answers to the questions above can easily be obtained from Murphy's magic. Nick

I purchased the DVD. I know very little video exists of Del so it was nice to see his performance. He did his close up show. I could tell he was doing some great magic but the sound is horrible ! Sounds like it was recorded in a gym ! He is not wearing a mic which would have improved the audio 100%. So although it's great to see a legend I wish I could have heard what he was saying.

Hi David,
Is he by chance working for a small group of guys in a NY country club? The reason I ask is I have the dvd that was out a while ago and wondered if it was the same one? Thanks. Best, Sean |

We (Murphy's) did not produce the DVD. It is only distributed by us.

I have seen the video, and it appears Del Ray is working for a rather large group at a convention (announcements are made about a lecture to follow his).
An apology is made at the beginning about the crowding and how difficult it is for everyone to see the table where he is working. This is also true for us, as the person who made the videotape frequently has the scene blocked by the backs of peoples' heads. It is made from an old analog videotape, but that was to be expected- they hadn't come out with home digital camcorders at the time it was taped. It is interesting (and annoying at the same time) to note another VHS camcorder on the scene from a side angle, and that camera seems to have had a much clearer view than the one through which we are watching the performance. I only wish the owner of that tape could have combined with the owner of this tape so that the two could be edited together for the best possible viewing... but if wishes were electronic birds, everyone would have them. This is not really a lecture, but a Del Ray performance of close-up magic. However, towards the end of the DVD, he does explain his set up and variation on Paul Curry's "Out of This World," so you know it was a performance for magicians and not laypeople. The DVD root menu is broken into PLAY or SCENES, and the SCENES takes you to eight scenes from the performance, but they are not labled, so you have to guess from the photo which scene you will actually be seeing. Take copious notes. Yes, the audio and video leave much to be desired, but it is Del Ray, so take what you can get because there isn't very much available and it is well worth it to watch a true master magician at work. http://www.murphysmagic.com/Del-Ray-Performance-Only-DVD

From what I understand, Tom Frame had compiled and released this version onto DVD awhile ago. Mike [/quote] Mike, You're thinking of the wrong Tom. I merely own two DVDs of Del Ray in performance, one close-up and one stage. I purchased them several years ago from Tom Craven. These are low resolution "home movies", but I love them just the same. I was fortunate enough to sit at the table during one of Del's close-up performances back in the late 70's. These DVDs provide me with fond memories of the best magic show that I have ever seen. I look forward to checking out these "new" DVDs. Tom Frame |

OOOPS! You are correct, Tom. It was (is?) Tom Craven that I was thinking of. Sorry for the mix-up.
Boy! You are one lucky person to have actually sat at the table and seen Del perform. Mike

This performance was taped at The East Coast Magic Spectacular. This footage is one camera of a professional three camera shoot. It was an excellent performance and is a fine remembrence of the wonderful magician that he was. What you have seen here is probably a third or fourth generation off of the master, so the quality is less than desirable. I assure you that the quality of the original is far better. This was marketed without permission. The understanding we had with Del Ray was that this would not be released without his express permission while he was alive and if released after his demise, it would be will the agreement of his estate. I have spoken to the person who put this out and he has assured me that no more will be sold and the remaining copies will be destroyed. He obtained the tape from somone who falsely claimed to have filmed it. He meant no ill intent by this release and feels bad having done it. He has done the right thing in removing it from the market. There is an officially sanctioned project being prepared now by several of Del's close friends. We have supplied this footage to that team for research purposes. We hope that this footage will be released in an authorized manner, properly edited and in better quality.

The vendor/producer of this DVD has instructed the DVD to be removed and all remaining units to be destroyed in light of finding out the facts behind it.

Mr De Souza,
Any idea when the "officially sanctioned" product will be available? And just to clarify; this video that was released, and has now been pulled from the market, was neither the Moonbrook (which I believe is the NY country club footage) or the Tannens footage? Is this stage or close up?

It is close up. Something I've wondered about is did the bear called Butch pour
real liquid from the bottle into his little glass? Thank you in anticipation if anyone can shed light on this!
