Well, I received Lightning and Big Bang in the mail today. Lightning is really cool but not what I expected...very challenging re: angles and getting clean afterwards. Big Bang is excellent EXCEPT for the fumbling with the clip part...per Patrick and Joshua's posts - it is possible.
I think a plastic bag and a "binder clip" style clip are fairly unsuspect, and even if the audience wonders about the "arrangement" of the props - the explosion of the bulb as a dramatic element is more powerful than trying to make this trick a fooler. It's more of a dramatic statement than a magic trick. HOWEVER, it does not make sense to me to carry out a lightbulb, in a bag already, with a clip from the beginning...this is just my personal opinion. If any of you are performing the effect this way - kudos to you. I'm sure you are making it work. To me though, I feel like the beauty of the effect is - "Check out this lightbulb, initial it...I'll throw it in this bag and clip it...to sort of 'isolate' it." Then move into the drama. Also - if the audience is forced to examine the bulb - they are more likely to ignore the bag and clip and (after the explosion) think "there must have been SOMETHING up with that bulb that I didn't catch when I examined it." I always love when the audience has an incorrect hunch on how an effect is done. It's the next best thing to having no idea... |

By the way...I should mention, in spite of my criticism, both Lightning and Big Bang are really ingenious effects. These are great inventions that took a great deal of advanced magical thinking. These are just technical observations.

Russell has some strong points above and yet so does Magicguy88. I have had Big Bang stored away for months as at first glance I didn't like the setup. Just this week I tried it a few times in front of people and it got some 'wow' reactions. While I can see Magicguy's point about wanting to put the bulb in the bag in front of people, I think not doing the trick because of that is a mistake. For me its just one part of a bigger show, and its the effect of the exploding bulb that shocks people. If they want to think about the clip or the bulb later (because it appeared in the bag when I brought it out) I can't worry about that. As magicians we perform the effect and their is always going to be people trying to figure it out 'that was gimmicked or that was..", yet most people are going to be amazed at Big Bang and that is what I am looking for.

I like this trick, but in two years none of us in the US and Canada will be able to do it. CFLs will replace incandescent bulbs (by law) in 2012.
So what do we do then? Start smashing CFLs which cost $3 each and contain mercury?! Clinton

Just collect the bulbs now, stockpile them in garage.

For me, This one is the best exploding light bulb effect.....
the best thing of Big Bang is, you don't have to clean up the broken glass..... Highly recommended and worth every penny..... |

I bought Lightning and Big Bang few months ago, great effect to do together. You need to try your bulb with Big Bang. Halogen and fluorescent bulbs are stronger and not as good as the old incandescent bulbs which explode better.

Don't know if anyone can help me. Our local ring had its annual magic auction last night and I got the Big Bang gimmick (along with a pile of ther stuff) in a box lot. It came with no instrucitons. Any ideas or should I just put it into the famous "magic drawer"? Thanks. (If you can, please pm me)
