I'd like to make a blooming rose bush. I am aware I would be better off to buy one. I am not making one to save money, I am making one for fun...and b/c I'd like to learn the ins and outs of them. Has anyone here made one before? If so, any advice, tips, or heads up you are able to share? Any advice on materials and methods of constructing? I'd be curious to hear any and all insight....
Thanks! Brian |

Go for the "living rose bush" if you can. Robert Harbin's method makes it possible to end up with a "bush" made of live roses that you can cut right off (never pluck real roses... they are tough and it hurts!) and toss out to the audience.

Spellbinder, where can we find Robert Harbin's book to get his method?
Thanks in advance. |

I found 1 left in stock at H&R Magic. It's in "The Genius of Robert Harbin" by Eric Lewis (1997). Don't all try to get it at once. It may be available elsewhere, but it's something you'll have to search for.
I won't put in a direct link so the one with the better research skills will end up getting it. Go!

Lewis also wrote wrote pretty much the exact same information in an article and it was published in Genii Magazine(1979, Volume 43).

I've never tried to make a Rose bush, but I am INCREDIBLY lucky in that I have actually touched the ones owned by both Houdini (incredible) and Germain (the one that used real roses)! Ken Klosterman lives here in Cincinnati and he's an incredibly nice guy. His collection is just awesome. Make sure to see it if you ever get the chance.

I will soon be publishing an article called "Flower Power" in The Wizards' Journal #14 (on my site). I was about half-way through the research preparations on the article (intended for Wiz J #15) when this thread came up and spurred my interest enough so that the article is almost complete and will be published on-line by the weekend. It contains references to the Harbin blooming bush, as well as Growing Flower solutions by Harry Kellar, James Elliott, Louis Hoffmann and (ahem!) myself. It also goes through the catalog of present flower effects that currently are done with feather flowers and shows how to make them with realistic or live flowers. Thanks especially to James Tong for goading me (nicely) into taking action and moving the publication date up to WJ 14.

I am very interested to know if the Blooming rose bush or tree, is this a public domain?

Wm is correct. I would never think of depriving you of the joys of designing, redesigning, troubleshooting, sourcing and making a blooming rose bush that I have experienced in 25+ years of making them. You would miss so much of the total experience.
