There seems to be quite a number of musicians in the magic world. With that in mind, this is to all the home recording musicians out there. I have a modest home studio based around a Boss BR1200. While it has served me well, I plan to take the leap into a computer based home studio. I am wondering what type of setup other recording musicians have in their home studios. Mac or PC? Which software package? What accessories and add-ons do you use?

If you use a PC: Whatever you settle on software-wise, make sure it's Vista-compatible even if you don't now use Vista. A big software expenditure that doesn't "play well" with an operating system we're all gonna have to surrender to one day, that's maddening. It happened to me. Don't just take the mfr's word for it - check online, Google (Vista "[name of software]") to see what real-world users are saying about it. I've always found the online comments at musiciansfriend and (oh, what's the other retailer? Something starts with a Z) to be helpful.

BTW, any attempt to record anything on your PC under the Vista OS requires some crazy-making tweaking until the system "allows" you to use the input you want, at trhe level you want, and any different use for "just one time" then return to your usual setup requires you to find your way back to the old settings through hidden levels of options and permissions until you just want to trash your new computer.

You've made a good case for going with a Mac based studio.

That, or you could enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to throw a brand-new computer off of a tall building. How many chances do you get?

I am a full time magician but also love to record original music in my home studio. I have released 5 cd's in the last 7 years. 3 of them are children's music recordings as I tend to do a lot of children's festivals from May - August every year and I always upsell my music act along with a magic show.

My current set up is that I use is Cakewalk sonar. It is pc driven and works rather well. Does everything that pro tools does but is more user friendly. I have lots of plug in effects as well as analog effects racks.

I mix all songs down to wave files 24 bit at 440 hz. I then take my final disk offsight to get it mastered and pressed.

Home recording is one of my favorite hobbies these days as I use to be a full time musician until I made the jump to magic full time about 10 years ago.

I would strongly recommend checking out a lot of the mac based home recording platforms these days as they are much less prone to crashing and they are much more practical it seems. I may switch over myself this year to a mac system.

Either way, recording is a blast.

You can check out my music site which I run completely seperate from my magic site at:

As magicians we create what onlookers call magic. If they truly believe in what we have created for them to witness then magic is real!!!
