Greetings All,
I just saw the latest edition of "Reel Magic" and I'm intrigued by a trick done by Jason Alexander where the spectator secretly conceals a coin in one hand behind their back and when they are brought forward, the mentalist can, with certainty, tell which hand holds the coin. This is repeated several times and the magician never fails. This seems to me like it might be a classic that he was doing. I'd love to add it to my repertoir since I do a lot of impromptu effects. Can anyone steer me to a book or DVD where I can learn this effect? Many thanks, Bob L. |

You can't go wrong with "Psychological Subtleties" anyway! There are a boatload of mystifying effects there. Highly recommended.

With the Relic you not only tell them which hand, you tell them whether the medallion coin will be heads or tails when they open their hand!

Child's Play will also work with the Relic or the Child's Play marble/Listerine packet.

What you seek can be found here.
http://www.taylorsmagicshop.com/category30_1.htm Be careful though, I have heard people complain about the "thing" you use. Jason kind of overdid the "move" in my opinion. But as I type this, I am reminded of wise words of Simon.

According to a mentalist insider on the mentalists sanctum Alexander uses Childs play, probably version 2. But I and he could be wrong.

Even though all the aforementioned routines will accomplish the same effect, and most are very very good, every single one of them was inspired by Charles Gauci's Eye to Eye and that is indeed the one that Jason is using. In fact, he's using two gimmicks and the medallion version (as opposed to the small ball version). Not only has he stated that (at last year's Mindvention, I believe, or perhaps it was in the magazine article), but there was a rather embarrassing incident during his week at the Castle where he got the gimmicks stuck and it was a big deal to get them out. (Sorry, can't elaborate further without exposure.)

Thanks to everyone for the help with this. I'm not very well versed in the mentalism arena and this has been very interesting. Yes, I am concerned about "the move" which seems a bit awkward despite attempts to make it seem natural.

Hope this might help
since you don't need to carry expensive electornics gimmicks or rely on Wording to do this type of effect....its Not exactly "Where is the Coin hidden" kind of effect but its almost the same...I think Better...The spectator gues/read your mind of what object that you hold in your hand so here is a brief explanantion Just Bought FreaKey directly from Greg....fast shipping and Great Customer Service...since Greg Himself reply my mail when he was in Australia giving Lecture its been in my Bag Pack for the last three months...and I still havent find the right sturcture for my Act to do this and the right Motivation to do this....Im now in the process of writing the Srcipting of this Effect..... since I bill my self as a Hypnotist/Psycological Illusionist... you wont see me making the Key Jump from one hand to the other...or let alone Change Colour! I will be using this as a 50-50 chance games using the Cooper & the Silver Key...I was thinking maybe put sum amount of money as a wager I hand out different key but with the same colour as to my Freakey Set (Cooper & Silver) to the Spectator, ask them to hold both Keys in each hand behind their back now they will Read my tiny clues and Non Verball signal, so they try to match wich colour of the key taht I put in my Righ hand...and of course they are right this is just a minor Twist of Freakey handling by Danny Archer Im still working out the BIG finish for this Performing Piece.... I end with a Kicker Prediction/Statement where in the 50-50 games I do 8 repetitions of wich colour key in my Right hand and the Spectator make total of four mistakes wich actualy they DO NOT make a mistake at all since after the game I'll show them my prediction/Statement that indeed I will influence them to make a total of Four Mistakes hope it helps |

Hie guys ,
David Shuttleworth has some amazing takes on this in his notes ` Mindblowing Mentalism '. I now combine his routine with my own using Freakey and a prediction thereafter . It played really really well . Please do check the routine out . It's the LAST routine in his lecture notes .

Is there a demo video of Jason performing this effect. I probably would be able to tell for sure since I am the co-inventor of Child's Play and would be able to spot some tell tale signs. I am also very familiar with "Eye" to Eye".

I've just checked my notes . It's called Psychological Coin Prediction in his 2004 Mind Blowing Mentalism ( pg 32)
It's a 2 phase routine and is really fun to perform . All you need is a normal coin . I combine this with Freakey and it gets some very nice reactions .

Mesmer, I like this idea very much. Taking a magic effect and creating something different out of it.
