I am just putting a new show together and to add some variety, am thinking of including a design duplication effect? Any recommendations about which play particularly strongly?

Well, with one of jon rigg's boards, I like to ask someone to imagine a special playing card, and to design one themselves, however crudely, it must contain a number, a symbol to indicate a suit and some kind of image...
I then replicate it, and give a brief character reading into the relevant elements of the card... I also quite like Looch's cheeky one, and the one on the Unexpected dvd by mr. spelmann and nardi..
I've asked to be banned

My vote is for Richard Osterlind's 'O.D.D.S.'. There's a lot of room to play with the effect and the drawings often have striking similarities - a lot of room to play jazz with this one.

"Duplicity." But then it's possible that I'm biased.
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

There are so many! How large an audience? I like Patrick Kuff's for close up or one on one. Any im*******n cl******d would work. or mindscan pads, etc.

Thanks for all the interesting suggestions. I am already considering some very good possibilities.
I will be performing to an audience of about 30 |

As for design duplications ,
You can use a no gimmick version or a gimmicked version . Ungimmicked would be using the likes of : Ian Rowland's Duplication in his Alpha Mentalism Notes . This is not ALWAYS spot on but it's a good read to have an OUT in emergency situations . A billet switch , and a good source of info would be Elliot's Switchcraft . This would be very easy and my preferable method since it's only a crowd of 30 . Richard Osterlind's ODDS principle . You can't go wrong with this , and you can make you own cards suiting the theme of your performance .( Some people in Malaysia here don 't get what's Jack O Lantern ) As for gimmicked boards : IMB by James Biss gets my vote . It's simple and the routine provided with it is very entertaining . James also has a very entertaining design duplication routine in his Messing With Minds toolkit package . I HIGHLY recommend that routine . The X Board by Menny L , is another board that I have and use . I use this mostly for preshow . John Riggs Brown Hornet . I suggest this can be used for pre-show and a picture dupe later on when you go on stage . This needs a suitecase when you are performing and the peek inn't instantaneous . Since it's just 30 people, you can also use impression pads : I've got Son of a Mindscan by Outlaw and it works very fine . You can also use the TOMMY PAD . It's suited better for picture dupes than word impressions , so I think I'll work fine . I only have these two so I can't recommend more , but these two work just fine for me . Most of all , there are many many many ways to get an impression , or know what the spectator is drawing . The most important part is making sure your routine is `entertaining ' . That's the 1st priority . I highly suggest James's routine in his Messing with Minds toolkit . It's almost foolproof and very entertaining . I've tried it , that's why I'm recommending it . Good Luck with your SHOW! -David Lai

In fact, after purchasing numerous impr****on devices for far more money, and learning other p**k techniques, I keep coming back to Osterlind's ODDS. As Tom said, the drawings often have STRIKING similarities-- similarities you couldn't possibly have known, as they could be in another room drawing their picture, while you draw yours. If you search the forums, you'll see that it can also be used for GROUP design duplications, using several people at a time, duplicating all of their drawings. Also, it is just as strong for stage as it is for close-up. That's a big plus. |

Quinn, Duplicity sounds like an excellent extension of the drawing duplication premise. I'm looking forward to checking it out. Any info on how long until release?

Another vote here for Osterlind's Design Duplication. Can play just as well for a tableside performance or for a group of 30.

David,
Thank you so much for recommending Switchcraft. I really appreciate it. An interesting coincidence is that the working draft of the forthcoming supplement has some discussion concerning Design Duplication. However, I’m not sure how much of the information will be in the final draft. Some of it may be saved for another day. Elliott |

If you are looking for a design duplication accomplished by 2 members of the audience perceiving the other's thought, the effect in Jack Kent Tillar's book TRIO is outstanding.

I heartily agree. Switchcraft is brilliant.
For the record, in the show I presented I ended up using two items for picking up thoughts and designs. The James Bliss Impressionable Clipboard and also the Tommy pad. Both worked a treat. And thanks to all who responded. |
