You are missing the point. Mentalism got a prime time slot and put out garbage. GARBAGE. Great, they put out a bad product and when someone comes along with a good quality product they don't get the spot because these clowns have destroyed it for them. Oh boy, the important thing is being seen by millions, cuz stroking the ego is the greatest thing...nonsense. There are people on that show who are no better than many of the hobbiest who wouldn't consider even trying out for such a thing. To be honest I'd almost prefer to see people pretending to have real powers in order to fool the public rather than these sorry performances. Why not open it to magicians of the non mentalism class? At least then they could have produced some talent from the bigger talent pool. Yes, Angela has a name, she is cute, and she didn't do a great job delivering your routine unless Um and Okay are in the script a number of times. I'm of the school that 'um' and 'okay' are filler when you don't have anything else to say. The two best presenters of the entire pack are Bavali and that Mike Super, who ever he is.
There are people of tremendous talent who will never be on national prime time television and that fact does not make them less talented than those on TV. If being on National TV is the measure of talent then that is just a shame. All it is is an ego stroker. I've news for you, I'd rather be good in my own market than be bad on PRIMETIME NATIONAL TV and that is what too many of them are. |

I have secret man-love for everyone who has stood up for what is right in this thread. It seems we are in the minority. Therefore, I give you all the coveted "Cajones that Clang" award.
The most recent do-gooder... BigDaddyCool! Well said. I have not seen very many complimentary posts, even though many of the performances on Phenomenon HAVE been better than I expected. If any of us on the Café were put in their shoes, we would have crapped our pants. Think about it: "3 minutes...that's it. Go. ...Remember, you're on LIVE National TV. What you do in the theater's and at corporate events won't fly here. You'll have to re-tool everything. ...Oh, and whatever you do...it better be freaking fantastic because everyone is judging you. So don't suck." Sure, they signed up for it and knew what they were in for, but I'll bet that the naysayers would have signed up for it too. Can we spread a little love, ladies and gents? In my next post, I'll start saying some nice things about the show and the contestants. I urge everyone to search their hearts and do the same. |

The acts shown on "Phenomenon" have inspired me. Seriously. There has been some clever thinking and routining that has challenged me to "take it up a notch".
For better or worse, what a great learning experience it has been to just sit and watch! Our audience is telling us what they like with their votes! This is invaluable information to any entertainer. I'm grateful that mentalism is getting so much attention because of this show. This has helped and will continue to help my own personal performing career in more ways than one. I'm glad that someone is going to win this thing and THEIR career will skyrocket (at least their fees will!) What an honor and blessing to a fellow entertainer! I've enjoyed the discussion that has ensued (although sometimes heated). It has allowed me to get to know more of you better and has also expanded my own horizons. I'm glad that a female mentalist is doing so well. What a great thing for all of the magical arts. |

I believe Criss mentioned he felt that she wasn't as confident as she was the week before and I would agree with him on this. Was this a brand new routine for her? Personally, I would have never chosen the "Girl" that she did. She looks like she has an attitude. The one who assisted Mike seems like a much better choice personality wise. Did Angela have a choice or did she have to use the one she ended up with? By the way, I think Angela will be one of the top two, if not the winner. Thanks, Terry

Ahhhh, I just received word that Big Cool Daddy has a horse in the race and stands to benefit. Very interesting....this explains his excitement. Tim, I'm overjoyed you found the performances so moving and inspirational. There have been few good performances on that show. Remember, that female has a name, it is Angela.
Read the Big Cool Daddy post and guess which one is his horse....and it isn't on a billet inside of the unfamous Angel envelope. |

I wish there were good things to say about Phenomenon but I think it stinks.
The World's Greatest Magic specials had great performances, I don't think people were endlessly bashing on them. Because they were good. This isn't. I don't see anything wrong with calling a spade a spade. I liked the premise of Wayne Hoffman's trick. So far it's the only routine I've felt fit the special as far as it being mentalism. I wish so many of these performers didn't feel the need to teach kids what Russian Roulette is all about. Angela's performance made me feel like she never did it before. I'm not trying to irritate anyone, it just stood out to me as the worst of the bunch this week. Overtly using your sexuality to get points is kind of a degrading thing to do. Revealing the name of somebody's dead father on your upper thigh is kind of sick. Not calling her out on communicating with the dead makes Criss Angel the ultimate hypocrite. Again, I enjoyed Wayne Hoffman and the World's Greatest Magic specials very much. |

If one is going to do something like that a context like having the volunteer use and lipstick and kissing the paper that is burned might have helped and then produce the name in the matching lipstick would have context. BTW, having that big prime time slot only helps if the program is good and its, actually, deadly boring. Otherwise prime time exposure only sets mentalism back.

I was just involved in the last few years in helping her get here. She comes to Nashville, I go to Ohio, and we work on her stuff. We do a lot of phone and video confrencing. I think I was the first one who encouraged her to be her own person on stage and not try to imitate any male counterparts. One of my specific peices of advice was to watch other women magicians and do what they don't do - specifically use her femininity as a tool. Before she left for the show we discussed some ideas for routines, one of which was her presentation of the "spiked" trick. I do a version of it, and advised her that a woman doing it would be powerful! I have created nothing for her, only coached her on how to make what she does better in terms of scripting, presence and presentation. That having been said, I am very proud. I have nothing to gain in her success other than the satisfaction of having been one of the guys to help guide her to her level of success. Now, as for her performance this Wednesday - It probably was the first time she had done that routine. The ashes on arm routine is a standard part of her performance repertoire, but this version is an attempt to make that trick look different and bigger. One of the mandates from the producers is that the performers have to strive to make mentalism "bigger" for the stage. So, that is going to impact the props and presentation. Did I think her last piece was a s strong as her first? No. But I did think it was far better than most of the other performances. It was simple in premise, and a pleasure to watch. The audience could grasp this easily - something that is often difficult with mentalism. Next to the Playmate, Angela looked like what she is - a pure, sweet spirit who loves everyone she knows. She has no pretentions about her skill or beauty. I constantly have to remind her of how beautiful she is. And she always blushes in humility. When she was cast and when I saw who she was up against, I honestly thought that she would be in the top 4 but that she wouldn't win. But after seeing the other performers (some who are top names) and how she stacks up beside them, I think she can win the whole thing. Actually, I think it will come down to her and Mike Super. Super has a HUGE college fan following and he is a solid worker and it shows. Angela is new, she's still green, but she is the exactly what you see. She is real and sincere and audiences appreciate that. So, do a have a horse in the race? I guess so. Do I get anything out of it? Nope. Angela, keep it up girl and I'll see you on the finale! |

I am thinking of training my woodlice to do mentalism, any tips? They already do a wonderful tumbling act. I had to start with them because the cows revolted, and escaped to the moon.

I'm keeping notes. Angele, the lovely Princess of the Paranormal, has more talent in her pinky than CoupCoupDaddy....by his own admission.
As long as Angele uses her cuteness and also does something unusual it would will benefit her. I think Mike Super is very good. Watch out for Guy, he knows his stuff. Man....just think of what they would have had should Jim Steinmeyer had an hour a week for a month rather than Uri.... Did anyone else notice Criss Angel dresses a lot like Britney? |

I ain't afraid to admit that she has more natural talent than I. I work hard to create the illusion of talent - but it is just an illusion...

Okay, so far the trend is for people who have the word 'daddy' in their name are less talented than Angelas pinky...which means they are far less talented than her thigh.

Someone asked why am I making a comment about Phenomenon when I have not seen it? Because I have heard zero good about it. From anyone that has told me about it.
Everyone has a right to comment on the show and to have an opinion on it. Yes even if they have not seen it. I don't follow others opinions either. But I can tell just from the commericals I have seen for it it's not worth My time to watch. So I have formed an educated opinion from that. That is what the ads are for there there to intice a persone to watch the show. They can also allow a person to decide what is pure junk. I still stand by what I said. I have heard from many non magicians and magicians that the show is not worth even looking at once. Yes I know for each person there is another one that likes it. That's fine anyone that wants to like it can. |
