I thought I would respond here to some of the comments made on the Café about the show and performers.
May not get to again for a bit. First off the limitations are crushing but we (The performers) knew the deal going in. We accepted the challenge to create in the environment. (Key words create in the environment.) We as a group took the challenge and that is what it is. Don't give me any of the saving face BS that you were asked and turned it down either. If you were not at the auditions in LA one of the forty chosen for live auditions you were not even close to being on the show. So let me see anyone one deriding the guys who went last week step up and do better than they did in three minutes. (Please submit ten acts as we did that you can do in three minutes and please make them original. (No cards) I suspect that put the tail between the legs of many big name mentalists!) Many know I see this show as a challenge to create a new type of performance art, exhibit, demonstration. Extremely difficult is the only way to describe the task. Especially considering the things I plan to do. No mentalism tricks, no magic props, I am the only Paranormalist on the show. Even Uri is called a mentalist! (I was brought on becouse of my unique skills shall we say) So if next week you do not like the test I propose that's fine but I do want you to know up front the others and myself took the challenge to create something new. In my opinion if you do that you win. Now on to what my performance will be on Halloween. I will be doing an automatic writing presentation on the first show. (A form of spirit possession) Was going to put up $25,000.00 to guarantee the presentation but NBC said that is not something I am permitted to do even if it is my own cash. As of yet no one has seen my test/demonstration. (I unlike the other entertainers, have only told the producers what will happen.) The producers and executives along with the other contestants have expressed their enthusiasm for the proposed test. (In fact some are quite exited about it and how Criss will react to being confronted with my work and my willingness to respond.) My performance is technically 6 minutes long but I found a way to fit those 6 in 3 minutes. The solution was applauded by the executives and producers. (Literally not figuratively) This will be explained next week after the show. But it really is what I say it is 6 minutes in three. Please realize that this is an entirely unique and never before attempted concept. It is a major Leap of Faith not only for me but for all of those associated with the show. It is not like anything I have performed before or ever shown on TV. And it is probably the most difficult presentation I have ever done. It is going further than I have ever gone. (It has some similarities to my challenge to Randi.) Question: How many of you would walk out before millions and take the Leap of Faith on live TV? I know four guys that did on Wednesday and am proud to call them my friends. To those who have shown support for my work I thank you for your consideration and hope that on Halloween I and the other performers give you something worthy of consideration and comment. My best wishes & thanks, Jim

Jim: I wish you luck. I think that, if anyone, you'll have learned from watching the others and how they were treated and plan accordingly.
To answer your questions, I wouldn't want to do a three minute performance of Mentalism, as I don't think it would allow me to present myself or what I do in the best light. I also wouldn't put myself in a position to stand and be "judged" by Criss Angel. That's me. I respect your decision to take the conditions as a challenge and to try to do something worthwhile despite the limitations imposed upon you. I don't think the four that have performed thus far came off well at all. They may be wonderful people and fine performers when in their element, but on this show, the critics all seem to agree that they didn't shine. You all knew what you were getting yourselves into, and to everyone's credit, I haven't heard any of you whine about the treatment you're receiving. I just wonder if, had Mentalists demanded more, the conditions would have been less detrimental to allowing them to really show what they can do. And I mean ALL Mentalists, not just those participating in the show. - entity

I can't speak for Jim, but I do not believe he will be "judged" by Criss Angel. Angel may not be smart, but he ain't dumb. If Angel gets on his usual, haughty high horse, Jim will be able to quickly bring him down to earth. I look forward to your performance J ack. And I agree, as well. You cannot be judged by a television performance that provides you 3 minutes to show them who you are, what you're about, AND pull off a strong effect that has a story arc to it. The constraints turn powerhouse acts into "what the heck was that?" reactions. That being said, due to Jim's originality, he will find a way to make it work.

Gabe:
I think you're wrong about Angel. I think his arrogance won't allow him to keep quiet, and he'll insist upon taking a shot or two at Jim (unless he's been asked not to by the producers). If he does, I hope that Jim steps up and that the Producers have the sense to air the exchange. Now THAT would be worth watching. - entity

If anything...this show has sparked a lot of new interesting posts here on the Café. Dang! I hadn't posted in such a long time, now this show has my interest. I just think it is fabulous to have shared a couple of e-mails and read some material from a constestant. that's as close to National TV I want to be :O)

Everyone who ended up on the show went through the same steps as the others. Of course many of the execs had preferences, but Everyone (First the top 40...then the top 20) was/were in the same pressure cooker in Hollywood I seem to keep hearing..."Yea, I could have been on there but I turned it down"... That's just NOT the case. There were DVD auditions( In my case) telephone interviews and dozens of phone calls. A tennis court of emails. There were extensive background checks and a LONG process of contract negotiations with lawyers on both sides....Revisions, deletions and all that RED TAPE I give credit to all of those that made it through, and they deserve our support!

When I was still being considered for Phenomenon I was cr*aping my pants wondering what exactly I was going to perform and how. I was consumed with this thought and tried to get more information about the show format, but at the time Marla could only give me limited information as they were figuring things out themselves.
I tried, and I will try again if there is a second season or some kind of spin-off, because I love this stuff and I find the challenge of pulling this off on TV under the circumstances is very interesting and appealing. Naturally there's always a chance of failure ... but I believe, as many others do, that you need to have the courage to face failure in order to truly succeed.
