So many here put SO much stock in NLP, tell urban legends back and forth and really build up the mystique.
So in your own words, without looking it up, what exactly is NLP to you? Define it for me personally what you think it is you are doing exactly. I am curious as to see the answers.

I "think" it's mirroring the actions of anyone that you want to impress into liking/doing business with, etc. They hold their stance a certain way and you adopt it. They brush their hair back, you do the same, in a subtle way. Using the same type of words, tone, etc.

To me the more hypnosis I do the less emphasis or weight I place on NLP.
The definition I find useful is the one I originally found the least useful, I think it comes from Bandler 'NLP is an attitude that leaves behind a trail of techniques' or something like that. To me this is simply a case of incorporating some useful presuppositions and using whatever technique you have to proceed behaving consistently as if those presup's are true. Most importantly, and this is purely my interpretation of the presupositions that I value, is this 'Reality is a point of view based on belief. Changing the belief changes reality. Therefore reality is entirely plastic'. As a hypnotist it is much more useful to proceed with that belief at your core as you do your work, than it is to spend time matching, mirroring looking at eye movements and using fancy language patterns. NLP was a modelling system which was used, atthe time of its beginning, to model a group of people who did what they did with excellence, in that case therapy. It is mainly a lingusitic model based on transformational gramar.
From modelling those excellent performers (Modelling meaning understanding the process that lead to their results) the originators of NLP documented a string of techniques, tools and specific terminology that can be useful in a variety communication situaions. (Sales, therapy, performing, etc) These tools were things like the meta model, Anchoring, VK Dissasociation and other tehcniques, many of which were borrowed sometimes with refinements sometimes without. The NLP model has broken down over the years simply because way to many people confused the map with the territory (To use an NLP-ism) when they claimed to "DO" NLP. You can't DO NLP any more than you can DO English, gramar or otherwise. You can use the techniques of NLP to build a useful metaphoric undertsanding of behavior, thus making it repeatable and teachable. My experience with NLP is that the principles and techniques have proven extremely valuable to me in what I do. However, it is not some trick, or secret method, and even the people who CREATED NLP no longer do it as presented back in the 80's, if at all. Several of the NLP models and/or models that have become appropriated by the NLP trainers are very useful observation and communication skills. As with much of the hypnotic experience, of which I do believe NLP is a part, most of the models work BEST if they are explained first, thus installing the metaphor. Now, as to the theatrical things I see and hear called NLP, the work in Wonder Words comes closest to the lingusitic models. The rest is, from what I see, like much in theatre- not all it appears to be.

Once, during a general conversation about a dissertation (unrelated) I explained my idea of NLP to one of my university tutors and he paused for a while and said, "sounds like other people's bottled charisma".
My opinion is that, although it may be of some useful value, NLP's ambiguity and lack of solid definition gives it most of its power. |

For me, I first heard about NLP a few years ago when I heard Derren Brown may use some principles of NLP. So I started doing some research (being the skeptic that I am) and found a hypnotherapy school that also teaches NLP, so for a laugh I decided to try the introductory class and wound up going on through most of the program.
The thing I discovered was, many of the principles I had already been using my whole life. Things like mirroring and observing accessing clues is how, since my early teens, I have been easily able to blend in with just about anyone, from young street punks to Harvard graduated CEOs, and have held my own [in conversation] against them all. The thing I was lacking until I started officially studying NLP is self confidence with myself; with my own personal projects. The whole modeling aspect of NLP and the acting "as if" has helped me in great ways (but has also failed when I wavered from these principles.) For example, soon after starting the NLP course, I decided I wanted to make a vinyl toy. It's all the craze these days. I knew absolutely nothing about it and the research I tried to do led me nowhere as the people in the "designer indie-art toy" business are very tight-lipped. But I just acted "as if" I was already part of that industry and somehow, just started doing it. And like a snowball rolling downhill, I had a prototype made (for free) got funding to manufacture the toy, got a distributor and a few months later my toy was released to some pretty good critical acclaim, sold out and is now being featured in books, an MTV calendar, TV commercials and a couple of upcoming movies as well as talks with two cable networks to turn my character into an animated series! Not too bad for a guy whose mostly just a musician. Was it the NLP or did I just get lucky? To me, in that above example, it is the cliched "power of positive thinking" built from the modeling principles of NLP, but then again, I haven't been able to work that magic lately as I've been having a run of bad luck, so I could be fooling myself for all I know! |

NLP is like psychology but more flawed. lol
= ) the useful parts of NLP are now basic theory in any psychological model, the bits of nlp that were nonsense psychology has ignored.. so is nlp relevant today? nope. |

Can it not be said that it is the Delphi technique adapted to a single individual.
I guess it can be said but never believed. Or believed and never said. Like many things in the universe it only exists when one is aware it does, the opposite being it doesn't really exist at all, to everyone else. Whew.....Glad we cleared that up.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

There are dozens of posts on the subject I think Danny is trying to take the ****.
Derren Owes much of his character and patter to Bandler who is a charasmatic showman. Derren "modelled" or copied him whatever you want to call it. So therefore "NLP" as at the core of what he does. Most people on here don't really have a clue... |
