Hello fellow Café-ers.

Gerry here. I am being asked to give a lecture on the history of Jews in Magic. Can anyone reply or PM me on this topic? I am not an expert on it (obviously) do you know if there is someone who is?

Thank you for your help

(here is the magic Café posting on professional Jewish Magicians)
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=134

I would, in the lecture, like to illustrate some of their effects, articles, images. Thank you.

You picked an interesting subject. There are bunch of magicians that are Jewish. David Prices book list those that are Jewish. It is late right now or I would provide that list that I know of. How soon do you need it?

Let’s just start with a few, then I’ll get back with you on it. Houdini, David and Theo Bamberg, David Blaine, Al Goshman, and David Copperfield for starters. This should keep you busy for now.

In the meantime, I’m sure plenty will chime in on this before I can get back with you. Jimmy Grippo’s student Joey knows all of those that are.

You can add Rickey Jay, Raymond Teller, Jacob Philadelphia, and Abraham Hurwitz Sherry Lewis’ father.

As for Jewish magicians, should we include Uri Gellar in that number? Hmmm! Smile

I was thinking the same thing. I just don't know if he is a magician or not. I guess he is.

Günther Dammann wrote a book just before WW II called Juden in der Zauberkunst, if I have the title correct. This means "Jews in Magic". It may have been translated into English.

Add Howie Schwarzmann and Werner Reich to your list. Some of these fellows are very uncomfortable about being singled out for being Jewish. This probably goes back to the old days when certain organizations, neighborhoods, hotels, etc. banned Jews from belonging or patronizing their places.

I recently saw a posting for the archive for "Jews in Magic" a website that no longer seems to be available but was through the archive website. Can anyone send me that archive website. I saw it here on Magic Café and did not save it. thanks for the assistance.

That's a very interesting topic. In fact, at the IBM convention in Miami, I was sitting at various times with Yigal Mesika, Eran Raven (now of "Phenomenon" fame), Joshua Jay, Kostya Kimlat, Guy Bavli, and in passing a number of times with others (name guys as well as hobbyists) who I knew were Jewish (funny, they looked Jewish ;-) and Josh and I got into a discussion on why there were so many Jews in magic.

A lot of theories abounded, and as you can see, there's a lot of the younger guys too, in addition to Uri Geller, Copperfield and the more "seasoned" crowd.

I'm not so much interested in the history, but just the why. You don't see a lot of Horowitz's in the NFL or Nussbaums in the NBA, but why magic?

Perhaps a lot of the origins in "old (eastern) Europe"?

Thoughts?
Dave

Most of the fake Asian magicians were Jewish.

Ironically, most of the fake Jewish magicians were Asian.
