Yes, that's right! And those were the days we were trying to be supportive of Daniels, but his trying to become the Fifth Beatle were annoying at best to the magic community! He'd be playing "Helter Skelter" and trying to operate a Square Circle at the same time's he's pulling a rabbit out of the amplifier. Electrocuted many a rabbit he did...
Wait, that wasn't Daniels at ALL! That was me!

Wow...that was almost like being at a Dickens Faire! One correction, Donnie didn't marry Marie until the early 80s I believe.

How did I miss all this going back to the 19th of the month? Kings Road. The Good Earth - still an excellent Chinese restaurant in Knightsbridge had an even better outpost on the Kings Road. excellent eating and very high quality though a tadge on the expensive side when compared for example with the renowned Ho Lee Fuk on Gerrard street. But if you wanted the cheapest and the best there was the tiny little Poons just behind the London Hippodrome known in those days as The Talk of the Town.No relation to the Poons chain. It was an old Georgian house with oilcloth on the tables and three tiny floors packed with those who knew quality and value - mostly Chinese!
Talking about the Royal court I remember returning from Spain in 1974 and Dr Evadne Hinge and Dame Hilda Bracket had been the sensation of the Edinburgh Festival that year and brought their two hander - An Evening with Hinge and Bracket - up to London to the Royal Court Theatre. As I recall it was such a sell out that it transferred to the Mayfair Theatre. And that was the start of a totally individual and unique theatrical experience. Their next was a celebration of their theatrical lives Sixty Glorious Years and that of course took them all over the world. Did that go into the Royal Court? I recall 1986 when I was working the East Coast and Norfolk and they worked the Theatre Royal Norwich and I saw them. The opening of the second half found them finishing tea. I should explain for our American friends that Dr Evadne and Dame Hilda - known even to The Queen as The Dear Ladies - had as their stage setting a reproduction to the very last detail of their own living room at Stackton Tressel where they lived in Suffolk. A small low table set down right of centre was laid out with all the paraphernalia of tea and Dame Hilda stooped. grasped two corners of the table cloth and with a deft flick removed it, leaving everything in place on the table. Spontaneous applause. Followed by Dr Evadne's comment "Quite like Lester Sharpe and Iris." I hooted loudly - as you would - and then realised I was the only one laughing. And both the dear ladies stared. I was certainly the only one in the audience to know what was meant. Lester Sharpe lived not far from me near Warrington, Cheshire. He was a name in the variety theatre from immediately after the war. A good sleight of hand and manipulation act, he and his wife Iris must have worked every variety theatre of note in the UK and many abroad. When they closed he went on the clubs as we all did and as they in turn closed he became a children's entertainer. And although we knew each other our paths never crossed. Well, they don't usually have two magicians on a bill do they? Except at those indigestible magic convention gala shows.

A fond memory I have of the Royal Court Theatre is seeing Sir John Geilgud and Sir Ralfe Richardson in a two man play. The name escapes me. Tony may recall. The play had begun, when a man walked in late in the row infront of us, wearing a leather jacket, and causing much disruption as he found his seat. It was none other than Peter Sellers!

Ho Lee Fuk? Isn't that the place where the werewolves of London get a big dish of beef chow mein?

Actually, Tony, I believe it was "Home" by David Storey.

Santa, Santa, Santa
The place you are refering to is called "Lee Ho Fook" from "Werewolves of London". Now Santa is there a Pionere Chicken stand in San Jose, from "Carmelita"? I am a huge Warren Zevon fan, and I have 25 of his songs on my ipod.

Quite right Al. I believe the place had it's name changed as you said. But to us old originals it remains the Ho Lee Fuk.It disappeared years ago, promising to return which it never did. The Café Pelican did the same.
Ho Lee Fuk was good but not in the same class as the Good Earth in the Kings Road and neither as good as the earthy hotpots and roasts at the little tiny always crammed and heaving Poons. The sort of place where people who don't know would pass the window, full of hanging mahogany coloured ducks and steam and condensation and wonder why anyone would want to eat in there. I met people there who were in the business from all over the world. I wonder if it's still there. I don't work London any more. They've made it so difficult to take a show in and work it and get out again. Can you imagine $40 every time you cross into the city? Just keeps going up and most major UK cities and trying to decide whether they can make a fortune out of drivers by making similar charges to take in a vehicle. In London it's killing the small business trader. Fuel in London is now £1.20 a litre which is £5.54 per UK gallon and which oddly works back to £4.54 or $9.08 for the smaller US gallon. Now who's the lucky ones?

Tony, I have always been a fan of The Chelsea Kitchen, and the Stockpot just behind Harrods. I wonder if any of you remember Gandalf's Garden, which used to be down the World's End of The King's Road, well past the Lord Nelson. I am talking about the late 1960's. It was located between Gunter Grove and Edith Grove. There was also the Café Des Artistes just off the Fulham Road.
I sometimes wonder if there are American Children's entertainers reading these threads who are confused by all this. However, if these important matters were to be discussed on any thread, I would think that "Are you born funny?" would be the one!!

Memories indeed Tom. In the West End I used to use the Stockpot's other place in Panton street, close to the Comedy Theatre and the Prince of Wales Theatre. Good eating like that at affordable prices has all but vanished today. Well, in that part of London anyway. The number of small privately owned places become fewer every year. Rents are quite outrageous. Paris is a little like London used to be.
You see Paris has a different renting system which ensures that small businesses survive and indeed thrive and prosper. You can still eat excellently there for quite modest sums, especially at luncheon. But then the parking meters are suspended for two and a half hours at midday to allow a relaxed luncheon. And I'm not talking about snacking either. I've often thought that dejunier is the wrong French word for lunch. As breakfast is petit dejunier then lunch should be petit diner - although petit is something of a misnomer! Little old ladies can pack it away like a Hoover with teeth!

Isn't it extraordinary how in England the word "Hoover" has become a verb.
