Some time ago, I had an on going gig at a local Pizza Hut. Every Friday night, four or five hours...magic in the REAL world.

In the year and a half that I performed there, one of the best effects (in my humble opinion), that really got great reactions, was the ring on wand, using the Jardine Ellis ring.

Everyone loved it, and it is a real fooler.

I was curious as to how many of you have used, or are using the Ellis ring in actual performance?

I have a routine, based on one from J.G. Thompson's "Top Secrets of Magic," that uses two Ellis Rings. A great prop! Johnson Products makes the best I've come across.

I also recently got Chazpro's "Gemini Ring," after seeing the ads that said you could do everything with an Ellis Ring plus a lot more. I wasn't impressed. Cheap plastic, and looks like a bang ring.

I agree that Johnson makes a great Ellis ring. Why don't you do a short review on the plastic version in our "The good, the bad, and the garbage" forum? Smile

Scott - where can your routine be found?

Just one quick note... I use a Jardine Ellis Ring when I table-hop due to the fact that the long rope that I use for my rope routine (Prof. Nightmare style) is perfect for the ring routine. So, all I need to carry is the ring, which sits quite happily in my loose change pocket. A lot of my act works in this way so that I don’t have strange bulges in my pocket.

And now for a random icon:

Andi-

It's not one I've written up, so it can't be found. Maybe I'll put it in print one of these days.

Scott...

Please put it into print - the world needs it. Smile I don't think we've had a good Jardine Ellis Ring routine published for at least 10 years. I'm probably wrong, but I can't think of any right now.

WHOA!!! I never said it was a GOOD routine! Smile I'll think about writing it up and maybe publishing it on Visions.

Well Scott - if it's anything like any of your other routines then it WILL be good! Smile Thanks for considering to write it up - I'd love to learn it!

Hi All,

For a good Jardine Ellis Ring routine you might want to check out fellow Yorkshireman John Hotowka's routine 'Wishogram' that appears in Mark Leveridges 10 Year Symposium book, and probably in his latest hard-bound book.

According to John's write-up it stems from the Franklin Taylor 'Thumb Fun' effect and is his handling and presentation that looks very useful for a lady celebrating a Birthday or Anniversary.

There is a routine in Barrie Richardson’s book "Theater of the Mind", not sure if you’d consider it good bad or otherwise.

I’d recommend Johnson’s ring, I have a cheap imitation one (anyone want it, it’s for sale on the website!) that isn’t brilliant.

I wish that the old Linking Ring Set was still available. There were two solid rings, a shell, and a key ring with a large opening. I developed a really lovely miniature linking ring routine with it that I taught to other magicians. But now no one else has the full set, and this routine requires all of it.

Ah, time passes and good things die.

As it has not been mentioned yet: Mohammaed Bey's pamphlet "Jardine Ellis Ring on Stick and Ring on Rope" is a good reference.

Daytona magic has it:

I have an odd Jardine Ellis ring that I picked up at a convention. It's about the size of a half dollar & it is made of aluminum with grooves in it. It kind of looks like a coin with a hole in the middle.

I forgot I had it, perhaps I will try some of the material that has been recommended.

My routine, "Jellis," will be published in the January issue of "Visions, the online Journal of Magic," at
http://www.online-visions.com
Look for it in the "In Your Hands" section.

I've only just discovered a Jardine ring. I've had it for ages in my drawer. It's chrome, by Chu's of Hong Kong. I don't imagine it is on a par with Johnsons, but I'm new to the prop, can anyone give me an opinion on how it ranks?

Not remotely as well made as Johnson's, but still usable.

I have a Johnson's Jardine ring and it is extremely well made. You cannot detect the gimmick even right under your nose! even if you know what the gimmick is, you might have to strain your eye to actually see the gimmick, not to mention if the layman does not know the secret. But I haven't used the ring though... just something worth having... Smile

Hi,
There are some nice routines with ace place Hong Kong coin. Which is similar to the Ellis ring. However, as with most gimmicks of this type, noise can be a problem. How is the Johnson Ellis Ring in this regard?
