If a Magician gets married can he stayed married?
I'm a professional magician and I am going through my third divorce. Is it me? Or is it because I am in love with another woman, her name is "Magic." In other words is it because I have chosen a trade that has a high divorce rate? I have posted a blog expressing my ideas. I would appreciate hearing from magicians with their comments both on my blog and here. My blog is: http://divorcedmagician.wordpress.com Steve Hart

I'm not sure it has to do specifically with magicians but entertainers in general. A lot of actors and musicians have had multiple divorces. I would say that it is the entertainment trade as a whole.

The trick is finding a better wife. Treat your spouse like a car and trade them in for a newer model.
At least your not an actor, those their marital habit is tantamount to wife swapping, Except the wives do it too.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Sorry to hear that Steve...
I don't think it's having MAGIC as a "mistress" that results in divorces... One just needs to find the right person who embraces the profession. My wife and I have been having a three way with magic for well over twenty years and all is well... Regardless, I hate to hear about that, Your wife seemed like a genuinely nice person. Could it have been that late night at IHOP when we all had breakfast that soured the deal?! LOL! Lyndel |

Steve, the problem is you are a marketing maven. I do love Cocoa Beach though, remember Brassy's and The Golden Anchor from the early 80's? I came close to divorce at those joints let me tell ya....

I guess the way to avoid divorce is to marry the perfect woman. But since I've already managed to do that the rest of you guys are on your own and will have to settle for a less than perfect spouse.

The secret to marriage, man or woman, is to marry them young then move the heck away from everyone you know, lose all contact with family and friends.
Then all will be at peace. If that doesn't work, develop a drinking problem (For those of you that don't drink, try heroine. It's basically the same). It won't fix anything, but will give her a better reason for leaving you than all the sexist comments that I use.

Josh, that is very accurate. My advise, which is what I was told over 30 years ago by a wise man, was as follows. If you MUST get married take the bride at least 700 miles from where her relatives and yours live and settle there. The idea being it is more than a days drive for most people yet is close enough where you can get back in a day if need be.
I'll tell you this, had I met my mother in law before I got married I never would have been married. |

This is what makes my wife so perfect. She is an only child and both her parents are now deceased so there are no family obligations on her side of the family. Since I was Orphaned by indifference there are no family obligations on my side as well. We have no children to get in the way so we can do and go where we want when we want for as long as we want.
As long as we can find someone to feed the cat.

Every "successfully married" person I know puts the other spouse's needs before his own, plain and simple. If you are "in love with magic", then stick to magic and leave marriage out of the picture. It is apparent that no one will ever be good enough to live up to your act. What you need is an assistant, not a wife...
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Steve, it could very well be because you are a magician. Besides your work, is magic also your hobby? It is with many, and can easily be viewed by others as an addiction.
Of course there are times when no matter how hard you try, things just don’t work out. Like Dennis said, I never say No. (out loud) And when I do, I have a really good excuse. But being married for thirty-five years now, it’s gotten much easier to find those excuses. Tom

I agree with Payne I think that the problem is you. There is an art to picking your perfect mate, my wife picked me, I do everything she tells me to do, and it has worked out just fine so far.

I also agree that many entertainers have a higher risk of divorce. If I had to make a guess here, I'd say that we tend to be a risky asset in the eyes of our spouse or significant others. There seems to be the fear of trust, in their mind, and I sense that with a woman that I am currently dating. Also, I learned that there was an article this past summer in a womans' magazine where women were asked if they would date a Magician and 60% said that they would not. Isn't that just a pleasure to know. I've given that some thought lately and decided that any future prospects will be told that I'm simply retired. Then after a few or so dates I'll fess up to being an entertainer. Hopefully by then it won't be a scare factor.

I think I discovered the problem. Steve says, and has done this for years, that he lives in Cape Canaveral and that, to my knowledge, isn't possible unless he is a launching pad or something like that. He likely lives in Cocoa Beach or one of the other towns around there. So basically he isn't divorced, the women are all wandering around the rocket range thinking they live there....

Just a note. My wife considers magic to be her rival. Her ideals about marraige include us actually spending a lot of time together.
It is difficult to love two women under the same roof. I heard that one of the Chinese characters for "trouble" is actually drawn as that... two women under one roof. Marry a woman that doesn't speak English.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |
