Is it possible to join both the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians at the same time because I want to join but I don't know which one to join! HELP!

Join em both! I recently heard that there is a bit of a rivalry as you get a little higher up in the oranizations, but on a local level I've never seen anything that would differentiate the two. Maybe there will be a big magic brawl or something at the combined convention next year! I'm currently an IBM member but plan on joining SAM as well. -J.R.

Join both. Both programs have awesome benefits, great fraternal strengths and killer magazines!

There is good reason to belong to both. Due to the absolute absence of local activity, I have dropped one or the other from time to time. I have also been Assembly and Ring president in several locations. Usually I am a member of both. I’m very active when I am a member.

Frankly, I recommend which ever is most active where you are. That is not uniform across the nation. It's a bonanza when both are active where you are. Then you really benefit from both.

The orientations are not quite the same. IBM is partial to those with uninterrupted memberships. Other achievements structurally take a back seat to that. SAM is more a current event (total achievements count) although proud of its history.

These are strictly fraternal organizations and not career paths. They are based upon common interests and not career development. It is for fellowship that magicians belong to these. If you think this is a business connection you will be disappointed with either. Go make friends in magic! Join them.

Very large numbers of magicians are members of both. I belong to the IBM, SAM, and the Academy of Magical Arts. Each has its benefits, the IBM and SAM each have a great magazine well worth the membership. This next year the IBM and SAM are holding a joint convention, but generally they are separate conventions and both great. In some cities there are combined IBM rings and SAM assemblies, in others they may be separate, and in still others there may only be a ring or an assembly.

Join both. I belong to each. Although there isn't a SAM assembly in my area, I still belong to it.

I think you'll get something of value from each one and will be glad you became a member. If you need help in joining, just let me know. I'll be glad to help.

You will find that many of the people who are members of your local IBM Ring are also members of your local SAM Assembly. This is because they love magic and look forward to as many monthly get togethers with each other as possible. Finer people you will never meet! Join both organizations and double the amount of fun you will have.

Many folks are part of both IBM ring 122, and SAM assembly 9. Some members are even members of multiple rings and assemblies. The New England has quite a few magic groups.

Go for both. In our area both are very strong organizations well worthy of joining.

The I.B.M boasts that it is the largest, while the S.A.M. boasts that it is the oldest. Both statements are true. When in doubt join both especially if there is both a Ring and an Assembly in your area. Personally I have never lived where both were active.

Our local group is a joint IBM Ring & SAM Assembly and they are both great organizations. While I believe that MUM is a little better of a newsletter, I was just given about 30 years worth of Linking Rings from a fellow club member and believe me there is gold in those pages.

So if you can join both, if you cannot join both, find out which one is most active in your area and jump on board.

You can join as many ckubs you like. There is absolutely no restriction in ANY club about it. IBM is one of the most free about it as long as you do not spoil the name of IBM. I am sure you will not...
