I am fascinated with wishes and the fulfillment of those wishes. I have always found them to be a most magical concept.
I am starting this topic so I can get ideas for routines and storys just like my ' Bag o' Stones ' thread. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......m=161&42 just so you all understand what I mean... I have a few ideas that I will be writing up, but talking about wishes one of mine is coming true today... My 666th post on Halloween is one, but one better is that I am off to see Jim/Jack Callahan live for his performance on the phenomenom show. YIPEEE!!!!! - This was a true wish, to see him perform live, made when I saw his prediction video online... and what do you know here he is in L.A. and I am holding the tickets in my hand... Today is a good day... So wishes do come true, I would care to hear storys, effects, anything wish related - theories, e.t.c. Thanks for your time guys now I can go comment on some other posts, as I have been biting my tongue for a few days now... Declan Ring...

Why is it that in traditional stories that wishes come in threes? Why is it that people seem to waste any wishes they are given. Why isn't one wish enough? How about the perpetual wish - I wish that whenever I wish for something it comes true!
I think that a good wish story has a wish in it that provokes the thought 'Why did they wish for that?' |

But if you had perpetual wishes you would have to be extremely careful of what you said for ever more....

The Bottle Imp by Robert Louis Stevenson is a "different" little short story about wishes granted by the bottle imp. Perhaps that would provide some food for a storytelling piece. In this story, the imp can grant any wish... but always at a cost (selling of one's soul). I think the idea that a wish is a double edge sword...a blessing and/or a curse...could lead to some interesting magic. In this story, there is also the twist that, in order to break the devil's hold, you must sell the bottle for less than was paid for it. That means, somebody is going to get stuck with the bottle... for good...with no opportunity to re-sell at a lower price! I think a story like this creates a lot of tension. Not sure how to resolve it and I still have several pages to go before I finish the story so I don't know how Stevenson brought it to a conclusion either.

This gave me the chills...
An elderly man was sitting alone on a dark path, right? He wasn't certain of which direction to go, and he'd forgotten both where he was traveling to and who he was. He'd sat down for a moment to rest his weary legs, and suddenly looked up to see an elderly woman before him. She grinned toothlessly and with a cackle, spoke: "Now your *third* wish. What will it be?" "Third wish?" The man was baffled. "How can it be a third wish if I haven't had a first and second wish?" "You've had two wishes already," the hag said, "but your second wish was for me to return everything to the way it was before you had made your first wish. That's why you remember nothing; because everything is the way it was before you made any wishes." She cackled at the poor berk. "So it is that you have one wish left." "All right," said the man, "I don't believe this, but there's no harm in wishing. I wish to know who I am." "Funny," said the old woman as she granted his wish and disappeared forever. "That was your first wish." Thanks for the ideas guys. Keep them coming.

As opposed to the more disturbing 'wish' stories the tale of Baucis and Philemon ends with their wishes working well...

Stories about Dginn were always moral lessons.
"Be careful what you wish for it may come true" Or at least, think about what you wish for. "I wish I had a billion dollars" In cash? wouldn't that make your family and children a huge target for kidnappers? How would your children get a good marriage, wouldn't they always wonder if it was them or the money their partner loved? Socrates used to pose a question for his students and then shred their answers to teach then how to ask intelligent questions. Before you wish, is the statement you make actually what you want? What if some malevolent intelligence was able to interpret your question as horribly as possible? I loved the "Whats you third wish story" by the way. There were a couple of wish stories on the twilight zone- One with Peter Falk and one with Carol Burnett that had some pretty interesting ideas. Pat

And not a small number of Djinn jokes, or so I was once told by a 12 inch pianist...
Oh I dread where this will go from here.

The link doesn't seem to work, or it could be my connection but I'm assuming the Curator linked us to his Djinn and Carpet piece.
Yes I do believe something might be in the air these days. My show subtley centers around wishes as well. All of this is very exciting, C
