Funny....
re-read Our magic... Can you really read minds? Or are you acting like you do? Did Angel really turn that lady into a double amputee? Or was he acting like he did? I'm fairly certain that Hugh Jackman can't really do the things he did in the movie. The naive comment was a little uncalled for there chief. I'm sure that Brad Pitt could do a great mental epic if he spent the 40 bucks.

Again, how can you write that without your head exploding?
Actors are not magicians, per se. If you really want, we can get into Venn Diagrams and the such but basically, the logic isn't there and you are just spouting off nonsense. Here, I can do it too Ooogle boogle doogle. magic mentalism orgasm. turnip turnpike japan. See the naive tornado burnip. And, frankly, if you truly think "I'm sure that Brad Pitt could do a great mental epic if he spent the 40 bucks." then you are naive and bad at magic. It takes more than $40 to do a "great mental epic". Oh, but you think any "actor" can do it... right. Knock yourself out, buddy. |

Mentalism is a type of magic in the same way as card tricks are a type of magic and dove productions are a type of magic.
However, like all magic, it has been performed in the right way to be successful. Usually, for mentalism to be successful it needs to distance itself from other magic. If audience associate the mentalist's performance with top hats and bunnies, the performer will tend to struggle. |

I find the show fairly interesting. Maybe theres no such thing as bad press. The fact that everyone on this forum is in a uproar about various parts of the show (Criss's ego, mentalists versus magicians, etc) is a good thing? I think attention to our art form is a good thing overall.

Your vocation, your avocation, and your Art is being presented to America in a format, and in a package, that is a freaking JOKE." Double whammy for the good mentalists out there. They don't want to participate in the show, but now they stand a chance of being defined by it. Last thing they want is for people to think THAT is the height of psychic entertainment/mentalism. Im not sure what else they are supposed to think. Finally, I may have been a bit hasty in my first post when I said that I was shocked that I hadn't seen the invisible deck. Now I realize that someone is probably saving that for the finals.

I'm just saying. I don't want to hear it anymore. Not now, not after the hero of this board did rope through body, and did it poorly. What's the difference between a paranormalist and a magician? A magician knows how to present rope through body for one thing.
So I'm just saying,I don't want to hear it anymore. I've spent many years listening to mentalists talking a bunch of smack trying to claim they aren't doing magic. I'm starting to believe that is nothing more than an excuse to perform classic magic tricks like a rank amatuer. For authenticities sake, I guess. A lot of people have come out looking like fools after this. People like Richard Osterlind have always understood mentalism for what it is. Which is probably one of the reason he never posts here any more. Which is one of the reasons this entire area of the Café is now frequented by a bunch of delusional people, talking about the "new" mentalism that has nothing to do with magic. (yeah right). Someone ought to send a PM to Richard Osterlind and beg his forgiveness on behalf of the buffoons around here and ask him to come back and give some advice on what mentalism is, and how to do it. Jim is one of the most outspoken people around here. If you ever bought into that "mentalism is not magic" tripe, especially as espoused by him, I hope you now realize he was talking out of his hat. You have now SEEN his type of mentalism. In the form of two giant eggs laid on National TV. He did the rope through body. It wasn't any mocking of anything, it wasn't to "prove" anything. That's his mentalism. Still, I give Jim props for doing the show. At least he did it. He wanted a chance to show his new, exciting, fresh type of paranormalism. Well, we sure got a good look at it. And if being one of the first people eliminated from awful show helps his career somehow, more power to him.

Judging mentalism based on that show would be like judging the state of magic based on MindFreak.
What was done there for the most part was mental magic, or just plain magic. I don't fault the performers, the producers of the show drove most of what went on. Mentalism (not mental magic) has a separate history, distinct and unrelated to conjuring. (Just as magic has with juggling.) Much of what you call "new" mentalism is actually "old" mentalism. Yes, magic and mentalism share similar material and methods, they have become sister arts over the past 100 years with many crossover performers adding and merging materials, but at the core they are different in many fundamental ways. As for Jim, he has stated many, many times that he mixes magic with other materials in his performances. In fact, he claims not to be a mentalist. I do realize that some don’t want to hear this, my suggestion, skip this and similar posts, and don’t read them. Tony |
