Maybe it's an addiction that needs attention?
Instead of smoking your life away, or gambling your money away, maybe it's like spending unnecessarily |

Unless of course you are a super rich person, and spending all these $ on magic books do not affect your financial situation at all.

Speaking of collecting certain books as they are limited copies of it, I find that books nowadays are reprinted more due to the demand.
plus, authors nowadays are careful with their words when releasing 'limited copies' of their books, saying they have not decided whether they are going to reprint it in the future... so moral is..only get the book if you really want the book! |

I try to justify it by deducting they will be worth more in the future if I did ever decide to part with my coveted books, my precious.

True - some of us are more obsessed with collecting than others - but again, some of us are smarter than other, some of us are more good looking and so on and so on - in short, the usual distribution of attributes and characteristics that you have in any population. In short - obsessively collecting magic books is nothing to worry about, as long as you can maintain the balance towards your other obligations and responsibilities. In the short time that I have been into magic, I have already started quite a collection of magic books. I have to empathize with most of you with an addiction for buying these things! I have now flooded myself with more material than I probably need, and more advanced material than I am ready for right now. I've now forced myself to not buy any more until...Christmas.

This may be an old thread, but it is good to know there are other mildly obsessed collectors out there too. This could be a good place to come to to discuss our latest "needs" - both to encourage as well as temper our desires. Kind of like an online AA meeting for magic collectors.

I don't know if those rules quite apply to magic books though, PapaG. But hey, if you want to start "giving away" your collection, PM me and I'll happily be your givee.
One thing I've done to slightly curb the ever-mounting expense is to forget about trying to hunt down pristine, first edition copies of every book out there. It's cheaper to go for the finely worn ones, and they feel better in the hands. |

There are a great many individuals calling themselves and are really accumulators.
There are light years between collecting and accumulation. The OP, after reading of the exponential growth of his titles, appears to be heading towards becoming an accumulator. With all due deference to the OP. |

OP=Original Poster? Well, back to me then. As for an update on my book collecting or accumulating habits, it's happily tailed off over the last few months, and I feel like I have most of the important magic books that I need for the purposes of learning, reference, history and collector's value. I've estimated that if I read 50 pages every day, I should have all my books read in 10 years. Will pace myself, like long distance running. Also, a few months after I started this thread, my fiancee moved in with me, so I can no longer spend all my money on magic.

I know this is an old thread, but I think it deserves to be resurrected. I hadn't read it before, but I totally find myself empathizing with the OP's emotions about buying another magic book. Especially when you're getting a killer deal. I'm also thinking that based on some of the other poster's comments, this is a common feeling.
I have more than enough material to last me for a lifetime, but I can't stop looking for new books. And to compound the problem, my performing repetoire has gotten better through the books I've gotten. I don't see it stopping.... |

I love books, and understand the collector mentality. This year hasn't made it easier, as there have been so many books that have come out this year that I intend to buy.
The way I see it, I love magic, and even if I never intend to use the material in the books, it's perfectly fine to read them as enjoyment, just like someone who enjoys reading science fiction would read novels. Magic books can certainly be read for fun. |
