I suspect that Jim/ J ack suprised more than a few people last night judging by the hits his youtube video's have been getting. But how many of us here expected anything like this to happen???
I will not compare Jim to any of the other misunderstood greats because I believe he will create a legend all on his own. I suspect ratings and controvesy is what Hollywood is all about and whether Jim will be leaving the show next week may not be as cut and dry as you think. I would be very suprised to hear that he's not been offered a tv special by some network. Even if he does leave he will be leaving through a mirror into a world most of us artists only dream of... Here's to the prophecys in the dreams coming true, and thanks Jim for reminding us that they can...

It's a poor reflection on all of us if a guy becomes a "legend all on his own" for throwing a tantrum, name-calling and shoving around a television host.
J-Ack knew, if he claimed to actually talk to the dead, that Angel would try to debunk him somehow. He had weeks to plan out what he would say and how he would act when Angel challenged him. What he came up with after all that time was: call names, throw a tantrum, shove/drag the host. J-Ack may be popular on this forum, but he's no Russell Crowe here or out in the "real world." He's not good enough to be worth the liability incurred when producers finance a guy who's known to physically attack people on live television. And please, it doesn't matter who would've "won" in an ensuing scuffle. What matters is that when J-Ack was challenged, he responded with violence. What credibility could he have after that? Who'd want to hire a paranormalist who tries to beat up naysayers in full view of his own audience? Supporting success without tantrums, Jim Kawashima |

I just don't get the criticism of CA on this forum. His comments regarding the performances have been bang on. Secondly many people, not just CA, find people pretending to talk to the dead abhorrent. Good for him for standing up to this.

Cannot be that some of us really liked Jim Callahan effect? Because you were disappointed by Jim Callahan should you presuppose that anyone else is feeling the same as you feel and are just supporting him because he is a Café member?? Tell you what, go on some big TV special first, perform and then be sure that we will not give you ANY support even if you are a member of the Cafè. Ok?? |

I have to say that I feel rather indifferent to Mr. Callahan. I've read many of his posts and have agreed with some and found others to be less than stellar. I don't like or dislike him.
However, I have to side with him on this whole issue. Several different points are being discussed on this thread. First off - Whatever you think of his performance style, that's his choice, and I'm sure it plays with a lot of audiences. It's not my cup of tea but he'd probably say the same about my stuff. Second - someone mentioned that he chose to get violent when Criss Angel provoked him. If you watch the video again you'll see that he didn't do anything violent. A staff member (was it the host? I couldn't tell for sure) grabbed his arm to pull him away from Angel. I suspect someone told him to do that to add to the drama and excitement of the moment. Jim did pull his arm away but I don't think that could be construed as violence. And third - Criss Angel started it with his totally unnecessary provocation. According to the show promos the show was designed to select the next big thing in the mentalism world (as if this program would be the definitive judge of that!), not to do an American Idol approach of embarrassing a contestant. And even the AI judges stop their attempts to humiliate once the semi-finals start. Here we have ten mentalists selected from a field of who-knows-how-many. Surely they can be permitted to perform in relative peace. I really wonder about Criss Angel's motives. The show seems to feature him a great deal, much more than Uri, showing lots of clips from his show, having him repeat "A&E Mindfreak" whenever he gets a chance, letting him give lip service to "his idol", Harry Houdini, while bragging that he smashed the master's record, etc. I was kind of glad to hear Jim call him a hypocrite. I hope Jim comes back on the show. I think it would shake Angel a little bit to see that the home audience didn't follow his lead. |

I think show 2 was much better, performance wise that show 1. All the performers on show 2 were engaging and entertaining in their own right. But three have to go so my vote would be:
1. Callahan (wow, what was that, unbeleivable) 2. Wayne hoffman (Pimp Daddy, Jr.) 3. Mike Super (Metro Mentalism Man) If I was Jim, for a million bucks I would have made a guess what was in the envelope. A picture of a license plate with the letters "RUA F8K" Jeff

When I saw the thread... I thought it was going to be some chatting with people who had visited the show. Seems like a full recap of the night.. with some subtle and important elements missing. Since I was sitting in the front with the celebrities and know the staff and producer from being a finalist, I'll add a couple tidbits that are missing in my opinion.
1. There are timeframes to work under during a LIVE show. OF COURSE there is some prep before a show... during commercials... but it doesn't mean the celebrity guests are Stooges. BIG difference. NBC can't afford to have someone stand up to help a trick out and have no freaking clue what is going down. Come on now. It is needed communication to make the show as smooth as possible. I will not waste time describing the specifics of conversations. It isn't the point. 2. Some material has been spun around a bit with consultant to make the effects "bigger" for tv. Perhaps, having 3:13 on every right hand palm in the studio is crossing a line... to what extent can an act use the unknown preset to their advantage? Seems like their could be some unfair advantages possible with certain amounts of clever planning vs. raw material. I also couldn't help but notice the similarity of the 3:13 to my effects I shared with producers. Some staff laughed later saying they should have had me do it to guests unknowingly in the front of the audience. 3. Criss was looking for a battle of sorts. Just watch his body language as he watches people do their acts. Some watch disappointed that he actually "judges" and does not talk to the performer from a non-all-mighty position. He is always better, richer, smarter, better trained, more experienced, self promoting, etc... If he threw non of that out there and just talked like Uri does as a Professional, there'd be more time in the show! Anyone else just want to hear Criss critique and not talk about himself or compare himself? 4. Every member of the staff, crew, producer are aces. Super professional and treat all guests with respect and thankfulness. It is a top notch group of people. 5. After the show, staff scrambles to get performers to sign the standard release documents. Performers are eager to meet back up with family and friends and go see the show as america saw it. 6. We all split up in different vehicles. Madman Jim and I zipped back to the hotel in my little roadster. We made it exactly at 8! 7. All of use met back at the hotel and "re-watched" the show and discussed effects, approaches, camera issues, future slated effects, interviews, etc. Making fun of each other was the best way to spend Halloween away from home! Huge cheers when each finished an effect or any of us were spotted in the audience. A few friends and family were in for the show and we shared laughs, food and experiences. We took some pics of each other with friends and family. Cell phones rang non-stop;) People miss their families. Laptops were out and some of us were already looking at bashing comments in forums and getting ready to vote at 10pm. Some are getting call times for the morning's meetings, rehearsals, interviews. Every performer was respectful and supportive of each other and it needs to be said that they all deserve our support as everything is in motion and they are pons in a big game now. I am only adding this bit of actual reality so people do not loose sight that these are wonderful, hard working folks who need our support regardless if you liked a certain trick, figured it out, think some should be in the finals or not, have opinions about the show, criss-jim, etc, Rock on! Best, Rf

Awesome post Rich! It only makes me sadder that this show is being reduced to a dog-and-pony show by the Phenomenon forum posters. I know that you have been fairly active over there. What are your feelings about the performers being reduced to tricksters and the constant attempts to expose their methods? I can tell you that it was a big reality check for me to read those boards. I hope I'm wrong, but it seems like this show is just trivializing what the contestants are trying so hard to do; present mindblowing effects in a theatrical flair. I hate when magic is reduced to "tricks" by people (or even worse, by magicians). It is even harder to read with mentalism effects because mentalism kind of hinges on the perceived plausibility by the spectators to be truly effective. Not many people in this day and age believe that a performer can fly, but many believe that performers have the ability to read people and get inside their heads. I'm not saying that one is better than the other, but the latter relies a bit on a distinction and separation from conventional magic "tricks" to be effective.
I find it abhorrent that Criss is having a large hand in trivializing the hard work people have put into their routines. How would Criss have liked it if someone would have come on screen during his shadow effect to tell everyone that this was just a trick called PK Touches? Criss plays it up pretty big and over the top on his specials to create a sense of mystery for his effects, yet he is quick to reduce the work of others to mere "tricks" and "routines". It's disgusting, and I would love to know how the contestants feel about having to perform in front of someone so completely willing to put them down and better them with stories of his constant one-upsmanship. I give all of the contestants a ton of credit for allowing themselves to be dissected by someone who doesn't respect them as performers. |
