I don't feel right being a critic of another performer. Let me just say that today any Jr. magician could do the knife trick, even though he shouldn't try it. But that is no knock against the performer but rather her presentation which left too many opinons as to how it could be done.
If the tatoo effect was not done with a "stooge"" or prior prep then I believe in miracles. IMHO a performer who will be exposed to millions of viewers on national tv should try to present an effect that will leave no possible explanation as to how it could be done. And of course it must be entertaining. With the plethora of effects available this should not present a problem. What should our impression then be of a performer who does not accomplish this objective? |

Folks this is easy, the tatoo was videoed being put on, we only saw it from the back, let's see the rest of the video, dilema solved.

I would challenge anyone to show me an effect that I could provide no possible explanation, especially when presented to millions of viewers you would get probally a 1/2 million explanations some ludicrous some possible & some correct. |

The guest judges, and the audience used for the effects in this show were STOOGES, similar to those you would find in Angel's show. I witnessed the preparation and set up of these events with my own blue eyes.
Is this what our ART has been reduced to ??? Anyone can devine a word/number that has already been previously rehearsed before the act. ANYONE... :cowboy: JOIN THE POSSE !!! YEEEEE HAAAAAAAAA

Your powers of observation are to be questioned. For instance, I have seen Gerry McCambridge do the drawn voodoo doll effect many times in public shows. If you think it relies on a stooge, your knowledge of magic/mentalism is severely limited. I spoke to Gerry last night and asked him about your allegation. The producers asked him if he wanted to use a man or a woman. He said he wanted an attractive woman. They chose her from the audience and sat her near Gerry. She was not a stooge. In fact, the performers have clauses in their contracts that they may NOT use stooges. One of the reasons that Banachek is there is to monitor this. The performers are required to tell him their methods, and he tells them what techniques they may or may not use. He accompanies the performers when they have any contact with audience members, eg for pr*-****. You may have been there, buy your observations are flawed, and your charges are unjustified. Bob |

Good for them. For sure the more I know the inside stuff and the more I applaud people who TURNED THE SHOW DOWN |

Jim Carols first effect was a STOOGE or do you believe that the THOUGHT OF card magically appeared in lady with the red dresses cleavage. Please don't talk on behalf of the performers as it is just heresay... I challenge anyone who I have pointed out using STOOGES, themselves to get back to me. And I did not see Banacheck once while I was there and I did see Gerry talking with the lady he did the effect on before the show WITHOUT BANACHECK... This happened 7 seats across from me, directly within my view...

I do not have a high def TV, but the tatoo defintely looked like it got smeared or smudged when it was touched. (Probably due to unanticipated sweat caused by the hot set lights.) Definitely ruined it for me.

Now, now children. Let's be careful with our accusations.
I have been working on that one effect of squirting a card into a woman's cleavage for a couple of years. I call it the "Tata Spring." The card is merely located second from the bottom. A DL shows the third card. A quick visible switch is done with the bottom card and the second. The second is "squirted" into the cleavage under cover of the springing of the rest of the deck. This can be done with one hand as Jim demonstrated. Parson

Gerry's illusion I can understand a debate about (I think he could have done it without a stooge easily even though I never detected a method I thought initially). That being said, I still love the wonder of magic and all but get real folks. This is a competition and some lousy acting on the part of some (if not all) of the stooges used.
I understand stooges are a part of the business and some use them and others do not. I personally have never used one. I just think my act can stand on its on without them and people talk afterwards, but I can understand others using them. However, this is a competition! How can anyone be judged fairly while using stooges??!

And since I didn't have to sign an NDA, and it's here in our small community, I'll share this: Many members of the audience (including myself) were ASKED if we wanted to be a "Charlie, a Ted or a John" for the murder mystery effect. Do you really believe Ross the Intern "spontaneously" came up with the time 3:13, two hours after all our hands were stamped? Do you think that was a "working" EKG that Guy was hooked up to? Not that any of this matters, if you were entertained. Jim, however, did NOT use stooges. Even for his first effect, concerning the dead singer. Both my friend and I were thinking of "Elvis". It was far from a sure thing, and Jim took a risk. But Silvertongue and I clearly saw people being "prepped" before the taping. And, as has been mentioned... why? The greats don't need it. It's one thing if you're doing a 2 hour show yourself, and you employ pre-show and instant stooges... but when you're only doing one effect on national television where you'll be scrutinized again and again (as we've witnessed), why not do an effect that doesn't rely on stooges? Do something bulletproof! |

JC's Elvis method was not stooges - and those of us he shared the secret with are lucky.
I suppose some people are not classified stooges... but "assistants for theatrical purposes" ... the medics for Guy for example... all that was required was to convince ONE person for that effect... who reaction would convince the audience.... so, for that, it really was stooges or whatever as gravy to an effect is not primarily stooge-based (if you see what I mean) - and that was one of the most powerful effects on the 2 episodes... and the celeb participant did not have to be a stooge or preshowed... it was wonderful when she leaped up and ran... I am sure Guy must have been internally busting with joy and the audience struck dumb.... The GM effect also didn't require stooging... but as I understand audience selection... good looking people go over so much better for getting people interested... sadly, see the show FRIENDS (arghhhh)..... As I posted on another thread - nothing wrong with using stooges etc... the thing is if a presentation leaves a person convinced a stooge was used (even if it wasn't)... then there is something wrong with the presentation within the frame of the time/space/audience.... the end. Oh one last thing... Dr. Spec,
I love ya, baby. But what's with this poem? It's not even good poetry. I'm from Texas. Good poetry rhymes. Like... Roses are red and white Violets are neither Pigs fly high And Criss Angel don't use stooges.... either. Get it? Come on, buddy. Get with it. Peace, Parson

It's important to remember that this is supposed to be a contest. If the use of stooges were permitted, then guys could be performing absolute miracles. All bets about "real mentalism" would be off. As I said, their contract forbids the use of stooges, and Banachek is there, among other reasons, to help enforce this. Unlike you, I wasn't there. So I can only rely on what Gerry McCambridge, my friend of 15 years, tells me. He said stooges are forbidden, and I believe him. Best wishes, Bob |

The body language of the participants I have called to be STOOGES speaks for itself... I will gladly break it down frame by frame if need be...
