I know quite a few might cringe when they see the words 'comedy mentalism,' but I do feel a mental act needs some light relief otherwise it can get particularly heavy with the performer always picking up thoughts, using books etc, etc.
My favorite piece of light relief has always been a psychometry routine. I'd be interested to know what others enjoy performing for light relief and recommend. My reason for asking is because I have been asked to perform to the same audience fairly soon and can't really perform my psychometry routine, with all its bits of business, a second time. |

All my routines contain some element of humor.
But it's important to let the comedy come from a natural part of your persona. And don't worry about repeating the same jokes. The audience will enjoy them a second time.

Watch the work of John Archer for tips on comedy in mentalism and choice of effects. That guy is awesome

I second Looch's opinion - Archer is that most sickening of beasts: a very good mentalist and a very good comedian (and I shall be seeing do his stuff live again this time next week!).
If you want a good, playful comedy psychometry routine, look at James Biss' wonderful "Knickerbocker" routine - it's free at online Visions.

I have never seen a funnier mentalism performer than Jon Archer. His act at Mindvention left people on the floor with laughter. But not only is his humor great,, his mentalism is first class too.
His subtleties on TOD and Key R Rect were masterful. Hennessey

Thanks for the plug Docsteve for Knickerbocker, but I couldn't agree more, Mssr. Archer is brilliant!
I think ALL mentalism (okay, most, with very few exceptions) requires a healthy dose of well placed humour. Otherwise a performance in OUR day becomes a non-entertaining ego trip with tedious results... James

Thanks guys but stop now or there will be no living with me at home.
I always ask the question "If a great comedian suddenly discovered that he/she could read our minds would they imediately lose there sense of humour... I find that comedy is a huge missdirectional tool and a great justification for some of the un-natural stuff we sometimes need to do. The skill I think is to be able to know when to hold back on the comedy. Comedy is a very serious subject..... :) J |

John, don't be so modest. You deserve the accolades, as well as the commemorative wallet from the Lexington institute.

Gerry McCaimbride's show is HILARIOUS! I loved his use of humor when we saw him perform in Vegas
