Saddened after Jim was voted off, I switched to ABC to have the loss rubbed in my face. The AMC Awards was in place of Pushing Daisies. I switched back to find that many of the same routines were being used.
Why those acts? Who bothered not to think? So much repetition in such a short amount of time. Boring. Definitely a step down from last week (and I am not referring to the "fight" -while Criss had a confrontation coming to him, I still did not like it) Next week I'll be skipping out until the show is uploaded. I'll give my ratings to a show with a magical element that is thought out and produced well. You know, a show that deserves ratings. Good luck to all involved. /paul.f PS. This is not a knock against any of the performers. My problems with the show mostly have nothing to do with them. But to be honest, the key word is mostly. |

Well I think that the World Series game that was on the first night of Phenomenon would have pulled more people than the AMC awards...but the numbers for that night were twice this....no I don't think it was viewers pull away from Phenomenon....they were pushed away by NBC driving the show into the ground.

In real time! why on earth would you waste it like this? Shame on Gerry. Chad |

Just awful. Excruciating Bavli and Raven. Super at least had a little routine going. Funovitz irrelevant, I expected so much more from her. McC did best I thought by not trying to be Superman, although it was marred by the lousy assistants.
Mentalism can work on tv--Derren Brown's series have not been perfect, but next to this cr*p, they're masterpieces. Just awful.

Prediction: Bye Gerry and Guy, and I say that with Guy being a friend... Unless Gerry starts spamming with emails to vote for him again and or uses his NBC contact in the higher up position to stay on the show...
Winner may be Mike Super or as he's been called here, The Dane Cook of mentalism |

I have to throw in a thought or two...
I am not a frequent user of forums, but I can't help but wonder why it is okay to say "fake snake bite", etc... in a forum that seems to go crazy over protection of techniques, secrets, etc. I'm not looking for a fight, I am respectfully making a point. Also, as someone who is a little involved with the show, I can say that there is a little disrespect to the performers being tossed around. The show is falling short to most of our standards, that is for sure!... However, the performers are having to jump through hoops and display "mentalism" in 3 minutes or under. Give me a breaK! That is not enough time to do anything meaningful. Several extremely talented folks are part of cast and many others attempted to be on the show. I too have had my frustrations with the show and have been going nuts that the show doesn't make clear what the heck NBC is looking for. The audience at home has not been educated on anything... I'm now thinking it might be good that they aren't. This show is not about the search for the best mentalist at all... It might have tried, but it has failed.... but the people on the show are not getting the chance to prove themselves. They are all highly successful in what they do and I'm tired of hearing how pathetic they are and how "the greats" are rolling over in their graves. NBC is causing that. I'd like to see less complaints about the person performing and more on the actual problem. It is really insulting to keep reading about how "NBC couldn't find a decent pro to be on the show". Some "posters" need to get your facts correct and show some support to a few fellow magicians. I also find it interesting to see so much speculation about how methods are done by people with hundreds of posts. I'm a little dissapointed in the replies to my past few attempts to add some good contributions to the forum and seeing some of the posts here are upsetting. I am grateful there are so many here that support and preserve the magical arts. I hope that others can help step up and "correct" some others here. FAR too many are passing judgement on ME and others without knowing all the facts. This coming from magicians doesn't seem right. You are all more creative and than that.. and should be able to see between the lines. Best, Rf

I think it would have been really cool if all the performers came out lastnight and said they were done with the show. It would have been a nice slap in "Angels" face. It would have shown great support for the mentalism/magic community. What is happening on that show is disgusting. Criss is a Turd!

Yeah, and then no TV show would give them a chance again - being labelled uncooperative etc.
Don't underestimate the allure of TV glory. Besides, some of them are doing really SUPER

Maybe it's the overly dramatic stage, music, etc., but many of them (Eran and Callahan particularly) are playing "too big" and thus do seem corny when the camera moves in for a close-up. I don't know if any of them worked with a film or TV director, but, if not, it might have helped. |

I thought Raven had a perfect opportunity for a subtlety that he missed. There was a spot where I thought, literally, "He should be using Luke Jermay's 'bubble thought' deal." I think it would have added a bit to the effect.
Then again, as others have mentioned, they aren't given that much time to do their effects, and making something like that work might have taken too long. I did like Mike Super's routine. I thought the combination of PK Touches and Ashes on Palm was well done and flowed together. Well, flowed together as well as it could given the time limit. And his attempt at the end to bring it out to the audience was bold, and he handled the failure well. Angela's routine was good, as well, though I thought her stage presence faltered a bit. I don't know if it was due to her interaction with Kendra, or if it was something else. I did find myself wondering why the switch to her leg from her arm, but it ended well. Gerry was definitely more entertaining this time around, even with (or maybe because of ) the mishaps with the guns. That added some opportunity for banter and jokes. And I found it refreshing that he wasn't trying to hurt himself, like Raven and Angela did. Guy was definitely better the first time, with the heart-stopping performance. Part of this impression is because I was getting tired of the roulette routines, but also because I didn't think it gripped the audience quite as much as his previous performance. He did handle the possible screw-up well, though; glossed over it a bit while sounding like setting up for an alternate ending if he needed it. Overall, I think Mike Super and Angela Funovits are the leaders. For this episode, I think it was Mike and Gerry. Joshua |

I am sure there are a handful of mentalists out there (Osterlind being one) who could take this to the top but for the most part, this is a very difficult venue to perform in. It has been said before, just have fun up there. Any comedy injected into the performances will raise the bar.

Mike S is the only one exploiting the comedy element to its best potential... and thus is scoring big.
(Getting shot in the nuts with a paint gun maybe funny for some - but if that is the audience Phenom is targeting... no wonder the show is the way it is)

Seems to me there is a problem... When I've performed on TV, I've had to forget everything about doing stage work, where every move has to be exaggerated. I have always played it as though I was doing close-up. However, PHEN has a live studio audience, so do you play for the camera, or do you play for the audience? It's a difficult one, and I think we have seen some of the problems that they have faced. Personally, I think they have all done remarkably well. (Better than I would have managed, that's for sure!)

If that's the case, however, then Gerry committed a fundamental error; he failed to exclude the most obvious method. If a magician does a levitation, everybody in the world thinks "wires." So he danged well better pass a hoop over his assistant to "prove" there aren't any wires. Everybody who saw this, including me, thought they knew how it was done. The fact that it WASN'T done that way doesn't really matter; Gerry failed to prove it wasn't. And like everybody else, I'm sick of the doggone Russian Roulettes. That may be the worst effect of the show; after this, if I ever want my wife to go with me to a mentalist's show, she'll say, "Aren't those the guys with the snakes and the nail guns? No way!" I wish Jan were still on. And, much as I never expected to say so, even Jim was better than this. |

Honus,
You are right for ONE thing. It has been said in the literature - "No matter if spectators get the wrong method or the right one, because as long as they are sure they have gotten your method, your effect will not amaze them".
Then you'll rise right before my eyes, on wings that fill the sky, like a phoenix rising!
