Does anyone here do Tarot readings ?
What spread do you use ? What is the best way to memorize the cards ? Do you use the minor cards also ? |

I sometimes do card readings. Not tarot though, regular cards. If you're interested pm me and I'll send you my system.

Hi La9,
What is your experience level with the bizarre genre of performance and/or doing readings? I ask as this is a very specialized area of magic, and particularly with readings a grey area as you are dealing with your spectator's personal lives and coping with a lot of personal circumstances. There are many very good books out on doing both real and theatrical tarot readings, but there is much to learn about the cards, symbols, and history, before entering into readings. If part of a magical experience or performance, a three card spread gives a lot of room for doing either a brief or more extended reading and three cards also provide a good platform for cold reading. If you are doing a true reading the minor arcana are almost a necessity, in a magical or theatrical reading they may be fine or just become in the way of what else is in the context of what you are doing. Unfortunately, to be smooth and professional in a reading, memorization is memorization and shortcuts are not suggested and show up as shortcuts in the long run, especially if you know just one thing about the card and a concerned sitter asks questions or for more depth. In other words, there is a great deal to bite off and chew here to do this convincingly and well in public. Credibility and expertise are hard won in the genre of bizarre, storytelling, or psychic areas of magic. Magically, Walt |

I do a lot of readings, usually as the entertainment for parties, wedding receptions etc. Depends on the circumstance. I usually do a five card horseshoe spread, if the line is long, I go to a 3 card spread,,, There are soooo many, I stick to what has worked.

Depending on the booking, I'll either use a modified version of the Celtic Cross (for personal one-hour appts.), or a simple three-card spread (for corporate parties where I need to get as many people done as quickly as possible). Rote learning is the only way to memorize the cards, but you can help yourself by writing "keywords" on your cards with a Sharpie (I prefer silver). Feel free to mark them with other symbols as well. This will "personalize" your deck and make it unique. And yes, I happen to use the full deck (but no reversals).

For events requiring 3-10 minute readings (most public events) a five card spread is used. What is the best way to memorize the cards ? Start with the Major Arcana, find a deck that really speaks to you. First the Fool card, take the meaning from the book, condense it down to one or two words. write this on the back of the card. Do this with the rest of the major arcana as well. Take 5 cards and use the flash card method to learn them, learn to associate the word to the image of the card. look at the picture and know what the word is on the back, read the word and know what the picture and name of he card is. mix the five cards to ensure you are learning the association of the word and card, not the order of the stack. Add 3 more cards to the five and learn them and practice with all 8. Keep adding and practicing. You will know the condensed meaning of the card and the card association within hours. After you know this, you have a starting point and can add to the meaning of the card in other ways. But I won't go into that here. You can also apply this method to the minor arcana. This is the method I use to teach my students. Tony |

Hi:
I am always curious why tarot or other readings are discussed on magic forums. Many years ago I knew a spiritual medium/minister who while not knowing I was interested in magic complained to me about magicians doing readings. At the time it astonished me that this group knew of it. After seeing a reader at a psychic fair doing the cups and balls I am no longer astonished. Some magicians can be quite strange. james1a |

It seems the cross-over between the magic and "shut-eye" worlds has become more pronounced in the past decade of so. This may be due to the influence of people like Brian Flora and Lee Earle.
This might not be a good trend. I find that a suprising number of non-magicians know what a mentalist is and are aware that mentalists aren't real psychics. I don't think they are likely to accept a person who performs Szechwan Sampler as being a person they can trust with the intimate details of thier lives. Just my perspective. |

Don't you think it muddies one's reputation to make it unclear if you are doing something legitimate or if you are performing tricks?
I know a lot of us try that approach, but I am beginning to wonder if the public really buys it. I think most people just don't know what to make of someone who does stagey tricks and then infers that he/she is a real psychic. They may just think that mentalists are self deluded or insane. |

Perhaps nothing Tony. Maybe I should just embrace the insanity.
Posted: Nov 8, 2007 4:35pm That said, I have actually had a weekly gig doing palm and card readings for about a year now. So I may be insane. I call myself a Palm Reader in those situations though. Not a "psychic", and definitely not a magician or mentalist. LA9 For Tarot cards, I recommend a three card spread for quick readings. Celtic Cross for longer ones. |

I do both. I call myself a montebank. I have no disclaimer. But I will lend my spectators a dictionary if they ask. How dare you bring legitimacy into this!!!!!!

When I do readings, I do readings.
When I do perform on stage, much of what I do is reading based, or else I perform under a different name. Tony |
