I haven't seen Phenomenon from last night yet. But as many of you already know Angela Funovits has made it to the top 5. She is the only woman, and has been one of my coaching clients. I am very close to Angela and have been very involved in helping her move her career forward. I believe she is one of the best natural performers I have ever seen.
Here's what I'm angry about. Today, reading comments about her performance on the NBC website from male chauvenist punks who have said things like she is on the show because she slept with Criss Angel (couldn't be further from the truth!), and idiotic stuff like that! One comment actually criticsized her for being rehearsed and polished. Is this the crap that all of you women have to put up with? I'm amazed by how utterly rude people can be!!! |

Yes, women put up with this all the time!
The good news is that Angela's talent speaks for itself. The majority of people know that they like her and find her entertaining and talented even though they're not "sleeping with her." She certainly hasn't gotten enough votes to make it to the final five by sleeping with everyone that voted for her. She got the votes because she deserves them. By the way, I saw her performance last night and thought she did another excellent job. I really hope she makes it all the way! Lynetta |

Hey BDC! No, the comments directed towards Angela are not a unique incident. I can't count the number of times the "casting couch" has been hinted at with me. It was even hinted that I was sleeping with a well-known magician to get a break in a lecture rate! In my day job...and these are supposed to be PROFESSIONAL people...I often catch the men talking to my chestal area instead of looking me in the eyes...and they think they are being soooo sneaky, too!

I have been fighting sexism for over 30 years. From my experience, the worst examples of sexism are found in religious organizations. Women are often paid less for doing better work. I hope that someday this will change and that, in the mean time, we men might seek and receive forgiveness. Parson

She turned in another great performance. I haven't read any of the comments you saw, but I can only say that they were way out of line and probably written by fans of those voted off.

It is a tragic reality that society still grasps to these misguided, jealous accusations. It is also tragic when performers play to that.
What was the purpose of the revelation's location? I found it an unfortunate and unnecessary choice. Stoking the fire rather than rising above it. |

I actually found it a bold choice. She is using her femininty and sexuality as a weapon. However, that is a discussion for another thread - which has been going on in the Phenomenon Raise The Dead thread in "Did YOu Hear The Latest?" forum.

I was saddened to see that the producers of the show could come up with only one female contestant. I’m also saddened that the judges don’t critique Angela using the same criteria as the others and leave the impression that girls must be sexy and use it to be successful.

Are beautiful women then supposed to hide their beauty and sex appeal and pretend it doesn't exist?

I’m saying I think Angela should be judged according to the same criteria as the other performers. Neither Uri nor Criss made any comments to any of the other performers that they needed to use their sensuality in their performances. It was aimed squarely at Angela. Why? Because she’s female. And I don’t think that’s fair. They’re lucky they said those remarks to a woman too young to deal with the situation. An older woman might have asked the question, “Why exactly is your criteria for me different from the other candidates?” I realize that Angela stands a better chance of winning this competition with tactics such as wearing a micro mini dress and pulling her dress up. And I realize there’s a lot of money at stake. I can understand the temptation. But she doesn’t have to reduce herself to such tactics. She’s very talented and I’d like to see her win with her talent. Holly

Is there not a difference between "sex appeal" and hiking your skirt up? For me her action cost her points in what was her charm.

This is why I objected to Geller's comment after her first performance. I knew it would throw the door open to the kinds of accusations being made now. Because she is the only woman in the competition, and because Geller keeps making comments about her using her sex appeal, every time her hem raises, whether it's contrived or not, those comments are going to get made.
Nobody is suggesting that we pretend it doesn't exist. But if you keep singling out that one aspect of her performance, people (who vote on whether or not she stays on) are going to pick up on that and begin to question whether or not she's there on talent, or "Talent and Ambition". No that is not fair, just a reality of human nature and society. If this were not a competition, or it was being judged by a panel of magicians, it would one thing. Because the general public is the judge and any Tom, Dick and Harriet can vote the dynamic changes. Uri Geller's pompous observation (I know, using "Geller" and "pompous" in the same sentence is redundant) that she was using sex appeal was going to set off signals in the minds of some that she could not compete on her own merits. It's not fair, it's a reality. Small-minded, yes but it is there and it will effect the voting.

Angela deserves to be on the show. She is a very talented performer and can and will use her Sex Appeal to go further in the competition. However, IMHO, I think Gerry McCambridge will win. He already has a show at the Hooter's Casino in Las Vegas and I thought this show was not to include Professional Performers. I guess I was wrong. I am simply stating that Angela has just as much talent as the others but I think that she does not stand a chance to Pro's like Gerry. My wife and I voted for Angela all 20 times each show. I would like to see Angela win because she is a Female and I am happy to say I think she has a lot to offer the community. I also think that she is a respectable woman and that most men are threatened by her SKILLS. And to all the people who say that she slept with many men to get where she is at SORRY, IMHO Angela just does not seem to be that type of woman, I truly think she is a Professional all the way. Her personal life has nothing to do with her SKILLS as a Magician, Mentalist, or the next Phenomenon. YOU GO ANGELA

The part of this whole thing that irritates me to no end is that the whole discussion has been over sex appeal. She is an talented magician, extremely attractive. What has been lost, thanks to Uri Geller is that she is also a person of substance and intelligent. She's a medical student! I doubt any of those commenters even bothered to take the two seconds needed to find that in her bio.
The comments about her possibly sleeping with Angel have their origins in Geller's constant mantra of her using sex appeal. To listen to him that was all there was to her act. Your average mouth-breathing tv viewer will hear that and go "hmmmmm". Like an earlier poster said, I would have loved to have seen her say, "Why is that even an issue for me but nobody else?"
