When training in hypnotherapy and Deep States, I was taught to count down (i.e. 1 down to 10) for deepening and up (i.e. 10 up to 1) for emerging. If I remember the reasoning given was along the lines of imagining floating in a swimming pool and one by one weights were added. With each weight/number increase you'd sink a little deeper in the pool. In reverse you'd become more buoyant, emerging out of the water as each was removed.
Most literature and scripts I've read however work in the opposite way. I'm curious as to opinions of this. As long as one's consistant, does it really matter which way you count for deepening as long as you use the opposite for emerging? Is there any better reasoning for working one way or the other? Thanks, Jon. |

I like to go the opposite way from that.

It doesn't really matter which way you do it, as long as you're consistent and your subject doesn't get thrown by it. If you have a subject who's been hypnotized before, and the previous hypnotist counted them down as 10 - 1 and counted up as 1 - 10, it *could* be something that gets in the way of hypnotizing them. Kinda like the story of Erickson trying and trying to hypnotize this little old lady, only to find out that she was expecting a pocket watch. As soon as he brought the pocket watch out, she went out like a light.
But that's only an occasional occurrence. Joshua |

This is an incredibly boring video of me doing "backwards" hypnosis, instead of counting down, to a deeper level of hypnosis; I count up and help her attain a "higher level of hypnosis" and instead of speaking to the "subconsious" mind, in this video I speak to the "super-consious" mind. I don't think it matters. In fact, I often give the suggestion when doing fractination that 'the numbers that I use will not matter to you" and then I will count in BOTH directions at various times... produces deep trance...

Thanks, pretty much what I thought - no reason it really makes any difference!
Nice idea of counting up to achieve a "higher level of hypnosis", makes a change from going "deeper and deeper". And mixing the counting within the same session is certainly something to try (thanks Richard). Probably end up confusing me more than effecting deeper trance for the client though... |
