Anyone see Ghost Whisperer last night?
I didn't think so... Well, it brought up an interesting side to an ethics question that I'm sure has been beaten to death (especially since the "Phenomenon" Halloween episode aired). It was an episode regarding "psychic mediums". One of the characters (Carter) was a fraudulent medium who became famous because of his "powers". Just like a John Edwards, Sylvia Brown, or James Van Praagh. The "Ghost Whisperer" character (Jennifer Love Hewitt) DOES have genuine powers in the show. Carter claims that even though what he does is a fluke, he genuinely trusts his intuition and uses his superior cold-reading ability as a tool to "give people hope". Somehow, this is supposed to justify his actions and the show ends with Carter being the hero. Interestingly enough, the executive producer? James Van Praagh. |

This is irony to the hilt. Like a dog chasing its tail...I know that some have
accused Mr. van Praagh of being a "fake".The series started out with some momentum but now, after two years,it's degenerated into quasi-nonsense. Art imitates life... or some kind of weirdness,LOL! I see James van Praagh as a STORYTELLER who has SOME kind of psychic or intuitive ability. I personally do NOT believe in life after death, but instead, something as the philosophy mentioned in the Cary Grant-Sophia Loren movie "Houseboat"... that one's soul dissipates when one dies. Of course, this DOES allow for the so-called "earthbound spirits" phenomenon...and people who die could leave a HOLOGRAPHIC mark on Reality during their lifetimes. The series' star, Jennifer Love Hewitt, wanted somebody to predict for her personal life---she's got an "Audrey Hepburn" fixation, and everybody KNOWS how romantically unstable Ms. Hepburn was. But Mr. van Praagh could NOT do this kind of prediction...so,she went to TWO no-name "party" psychics...One set her up with a random date...and,the other,at the one-year mark, gave her a "yes-man" nod... something that the public would have rejected at the outset. (Presumably, career success for the actress is once again duplicating a past personal mistake.) Could James van Praagh be reading people's minds when he talks about departed loved ones? Perhaps...I can't write van Praagh off as a total fraud, because he's got SOMETHING going on...an enviable track record of successful TV shows...but he's NOT a genuine all-round psychic like the ORIGINAL Dutchman,PETER HURKOS (RIP) Interest in psychic phenomena---which seems "miraculous" or "magical" at times--- is a great thing. BUT one should STILL "keep one's feet on the ground" if "one's head is in the clouds". |

Update: As of this week,Jennifer Love Hewitt has officially broken her engagement to the foreign guy who was "approved" (read:rubber-stamped) two years ago by a
Gypsy-type Tarot reader. On the other hand,"Ghost Whisperer" is stronger than ever in the ratings. Dr. Phil had a show about real (and fake) psychics. And James van Praagh was on... he was called a "focussed" psychic...Though I find some of van Praagh's work ques- tionable,he MUST have some kind of real psychic/intuitive ability to write such a successful show. |
