Yeah THE Bruce.
His new album "Magic" contains probably the best song about magicians ever produced. Fortunately it has a dark feel and a wonderful dark melody and won't be headlining Las Vegas acts as it doesn't ooze spandex like previous songs about our art Magic - Bruce Springsteen I got a coin in my palm I can make it disappear I got a card up my sleeve Name it and I'll pull it out your ear I got a rabbit in my hat If you want to come and see This is what it will be this is what it will be I got shackles on my wrist Soon I'll slip 'em and be gone Chain me in a box in your river And I'll rise singing this song Trust none of what you hear And less of what you see This is what it will be this is what it will be I got a shiny saw blade All I need's a volunteer I'll cut you in half While you're smiling ear to ear And the freedom that you sought's driftin like a ghost amongst the trees This is what it will be this is what it will be Now there's a fire down below But it's comin' up here So leave everything you know And carry only what you fear On the road the sun is sinkin' low There's bodies hangin' in the trees This is what it will be this is what it will be And by the way, the rest of the album is superb as well. I was ambivalent at first about picking it up tonight but I was blown away. What an artist!

Great song. Probably the best in the album.
I just called Bruce to ask for permission to use it in my show. He was very friendly and said he'd have to check with the label. |

I heard somewhere that a portion (I have no idea how much) of a song can be used without permission. Does anyone know if this is fact or fiction?

There is some truth to it, but intention also plays a part.
I think maybe 10 seconds is the practical limit, but I don't really know.

Oh yeah? Well Bruce just called me and asked "Who's this guy Joshua Lozoff?" I was real friendly and said as far I knew Joshua is very Deep and is suitable for groups as small 20 and talks fast and has traveled around the world and studied with the masters. Bruce for cryin' out loud do a Google!" He said "Ok." Oh and I told him to pronounce a bit clearer or maybe have Josh Gobin do the song for performers... Just kidding but best of luck to you to GET THAT SONG! Like your web presence.

It's a fantastic song but it paints magicians the same as con men and power hungry politicians:
"And the freedom that you sought's driftin like a ghost amongst the trees" and: "So leave everything you know And carry only what you fear On the road the sun is sinkin' low There's bodies hangin' in the trees This is what it will be this is what it will be" I'm sure someone is going to think "Well it's all up to one's own interpretation". But magician's always get portrayed as murderers or shiesty bad guys in most movies, books, television and theater shows...Not that we don't deserve it in some way (I'm speaking about all magician's as a culture throughout the 20th and now 21st century.) I hope that us modern day magic/bizarre/mental folks can begin to change these negative portrayals of our art by giving our audiences not just mystery or darkness or wonder but some real substance in our work and showing it to the whole world! Maybe then the rest of the world can begin to see what we do as a true and viable artform....I feel like we're on the edge of it. Of this new frontier, shall we say. It just needs a bit of a push. I hope we can all start pushing together........ Yours Truly Christian Cagigal

Christiancagigal: Fortunatlely most will not have the lyrics to refer to and these days the 'Boss' is long past his 'Human Touch' days when you can understand most of what he sings.

Christian,
I'm not a murderer, but I've run a monte game in my time, that probably makes me a shiester. I don't mind being called that. Hey, we all gotta eat. So Josh, you "just called" Bruce Springsteen. Wow! Hey, PM me his number, the DC show sold out and I need to find some tickets. On a serious note, I noticed you'll be in Harrisonburg for New Year's. Good gig, I'll come over and see you. Mark

Doug,
Bruce said you gave him a hard time, but he loves your spunky spirit! And both your demented eyes. And I don't think he was talking about your props. Mark, I have no idea where they will put me, but I'll let you know. I'd love to meet you. I have had only 3 Virginia gigs this whole year, and 2 have been in Harrisonburg. (The first was at JMU a couple of months ago.) It is kind of a dark song, more like The Prestige kind of magician. But I'm just honored Bruce was inspired enough by me to write a song about magic. |

In keeping with the year of Josh's, I'll write a song "Spunky Spirit" and have Josh the Superfluous record it...btw, I'm changing my name to Josh legally...I feel so left out!
But seriously folks...I listened to most of the cuts on that Magic album and there are some very haunting hooks that can be capitalized on with an instrumental cover. Good luck with getting approval Joshua. :) Doug Here ya go... ----------------------------------- I am Spunky with a spirit I have Spunky spirit Do the spirit Do the Spunky Do the Spunky Spirit While Hangin' in the trees just feel the breeze enjoy the ride While hangin' in the trees always look on the bright side I am Spunky with a spirit I have spunky spirit Do the spirit Do the Spunky Do the Spunky Spirit ----------------------------------------- Now that's about a hundred more words than Hall and Oats ever wrote. Josh S. grab your guitar!
