I've been hired to do walk-around magic for kids at a Hanukkah celebration, the only thing is, I've never done one before! It's unique of course because of it's religious affiliation. I'm sure there are certain tricks that play better than others. Any advice/suggestions for specific tricks? Thanks

How old are the kids? Did they tell you that the effects or some of the effects need to be related to Hanukkah? Is this organization orthodox, conservative or reformed?

First of all Chanukah is not a religious holiday. It might seem that way because of its competition with Christmas. It used to be a minor holiday in days past.
Any magic that has to do with candles, fire, oil, doughnuts and potato pancakes, Chanukah gelt (Chocolate Coins will do), and dreidels (spinning tops with Hebrew letters) would work. And of course any magic that you do already will be just fine. Chanukah is the festival of lights. It celebrates the victory of the Macabees and the "miracle" of an urn of oil that should have burned for one day, but lasted for eight days.

To get everyone in the mood you could open the show by having everyone sing "Chanukah Matatah"

Nucinud,
It is irrelevant if you believe Chanukah is a religious holiday or a festival of lights. The point is that dearwiseone was retaiend to perform for a strolling close-up gig for a Chanukah party. Carrying candles and potatoe pancakes (latkas) would not be recommended. Just because the event is a Chanukah party does not mean that the effects have to be connected with this holiday. It depends again what was the understanding with the organization and whether or not this organization is orthodox, conservative or reformed. Also it is important to know what ages are the children. D'lites may be a good effect (celebration of lights) and doing a close-up misers routine using chocolate coins may be good idea although you will need to stash away a bag of these coins somewhere sicne yuo will be giving them away. Multiplying candles, one set in each hand. that's a total of 8 candles.
You can do coin magic with chocolate coins. A gelt coin matrix. I am jewish and would like to see more jewish themed magic.

Matt,
I would also like to see more jewish themed magic. A gelt coin matrix is also a good idea. A small loto bowl could be used to make "oil" appear for the 8 days but again carrying it around and using liquid for a walkaround show is not a good idea. Perhaps a basic silk vanish using a TT could be made into a story about the victory of the Macabees, as Nucinud mentioned.

I think the thing to keep in mind is that kids are kids. Just do what you normally do. I don't think you have the time to hone any real holiday specific things, but you could change some already in the bag routines to fit the occaision.

I agree that one would do well with what you are good at- your usual matgerial. If the group is orthodox, it is imp;ortant that if you pass out candy, or anything to eat, it must be kosher.

If they are Orthodox don't touch the girls, or try to shake hands with the women.
Santa Frankie is Polish.

I really don't think that it's necessary to theme the show. I've done many Hanukkah shows, opened the show and closed the show by wishing everyone a happy Hanukkah, and maybe used 'happy Hanukkah' as the magic word. Orthodox, secular, it's all the same. Just get out there, entertain them and you'll be a hit.

I am marketing a Mennorah silk set that will be advertised in MUM shortly. There is information on the website. It is similar to what I made Silly Billy.
