Silly Billy's Kidabra Holiday Magic presentation tries to do his best with Hannukah magic and his lotta bowl with eight days of oil works fairly well. I'd also go for some sort of dreidel appearance (they're cheap now at dollar stores). And depending on how orthodox the crowd is, Santa's almost got a secular nature by now. Do you all agree? Ever do a Santa or Rudolph trick at a Hannukah show (if the client is okay with that?).

Mumblemore...don't do a Santa or Rudolph trick at a Hannukah show. Unless you want to look totally clueless.

Just a bit of information, (as I understand it). Hanukkah was a minor 'holiday' on the Hebrew calender. Never any big deal. When kids were coming home talking about all of the great Xmas gifts that their friends received, Hanukkah gradually took on a different meaning in the U.S. Instead of a small token gift, families celebrated Hanukkah the way our neighbors celebrated Christmas. Parties, gifts, the whole works. So, I would not use Rudolf, and I would not use Santa silks.
Let's put the Han back in Hanukkah. |

Okay, you're probably right. But all my Jewish relatives celebrate Hannukah but always include Rudolph and/or Santa (just nothing religious). But you are no doubt right to "play it safe." Jakeg is right that it is a minor holiday, but when all the Christian kids started getting the "good gifts," the Jewish kids pleaded for better loot ("gelt" is the chocolate money given at Hannukah, but the kids also wanted more than a few chocolate coins - which would be great to appear from a square circle at the end - and socks, which is what we always got as kids). So one "inside" joke is to do a gift production for each night of Hannukah, but make it socks, undershirts, ties, and other non-descript, humorless stuff. You can get the "gelt" coins (like the pirate chocolate coins but usually with Hebrew lettering) at some dollar stores.

Living in Israel, I have performed loads of Hanuka parties. Both stage shows and walk-abouts.
It was mentioned above but I would also say that it's best to present whatever you are used to. The whole thing about Hanuka (the festival of lights) is the 'Miracle'. The Miracle being how a small jar of oil managed to keep alight for 8 days and 8 nights. So do your stuff and just mention how your miracles are similar to those that occured with the oil etc. Miracle of magic - Miracle of light. If you have a self lighting lightbulb - this could be quite an attraction or a vanishing candle or something along those realms. Enjoy it, Dani |

I was gonna suggest they use, oh man there goes my memory again, one of those pots that you pour out fluid until it seems empty then you can pour more. I didn't because reading some of what people are suggesting here has me beating my head against my monitor and it makes it hard to type.

Yes MagicHannukahHarry, the lotta bowl to pour the oil eight times (use water with a little yellow food coloring). Also, as Silly Billy says in Kidabra, and danryb gets at, say "this isn't a magic trick, it's a miracle" and then you get a little more Hannukah mileage out of it. Also, I bought an excellent RC candle from craig filicetti (search him above) and am going to mess with the light and then switch it with a real candle to use to light rest of candles of menorah (the most important symbol - candlestick with eight candle holders, one for each night the oil lasted beyond expectations). You can get menorah stickers cheap at AC Moore, and you can also get dreidels and gelt (chocolate coins) there and at some Dollar Stores.

Perhaps it is important to mention that you light one candle in the menorah every night. On the 4th night, you light four, etc. So if you are performing on a night of Hannukah, if it's the 6th night, you may want to appear six candles or light six, or whatever.

That bit where you produce presents, and they're always boring ones (socks, belts, etc.) is terrific and should go in anyone's holiday show!
Seems to me that you should make a cardboard tip-over box, like a double tip-over trunk, and the outer box would be a shipping box, with the inner one a wrapped package. Show it empty, close it, do the magic...pull out the present. Socks again?! Aaarrrgh. If you don't know how to make a tip-over trunk, look in the Mark Wilson Course. Here's a website with the double-box model: http://aleena.com/tilford/tipOver.html Jeff |

Just to plop a little religiosity in. Christmas is a minor holiday in the Christian calander. It is Easter that is the major holiday.
Christmas became so large in part because people needed something to look forward to in the cold winter months. So Chanukah doesn't have to feel like some red-headed step child of a holiday. And we all got 'Chanukah Matata', we just were laughing on the inside, way down deep on the inside . |

Here's a suggestion - do a trick where you sprinkle the kids with water, then tell the parents, "tada - you've all been baptized!! thank you for accepting the lord jesus christ as your savior!!"
(ok, just joking...) |

To follow ximines I would love to share a story Bob Kohler told a week or so ago at our weekly magic club about doing a gig at a bar mitzvah, but it is not appropriate for this forum (or any other for that matter). Think finger chopper and another Jewish right of passage.
Pm me if you want me hear(read)it. |

Ouch. All that kid wants for Channukah is a life supply of band-aids.
