Why is the smudge ashes all the time? Eye shadow comes in a rainbow of colors.
Gray or green might be moss or fungus from an ancient artifact, red for blood or wine, brown might be firt or bat dung, gold glitter might be gold dust from king solomon's mine. So many possibilities, yet we seem locked into thinking in terms of ashes only. |

Sawdust creates the best ashes. Add a bit of talcum powder....perfumed ashes..Cleopatra ...a-ha...Joss sticks also give ash.

I like the burnt scent real ash can give,
while make-up is easy, there is a quality of reality to ashes, and it includes other senses with texture and smell. Blood makes a nice change from ash on palm as well... My two-cents, Walt |

Basically anything with a carbon content should give you nice black ash when burnt, if you want authentic ash.
What if you burnt carbon copy paper instead of normal paper..?

A wealth of info, thanks everyone. The blood effect is very interesting, I need to give this some thought to come up with a nice little routine. A simple streamline poke/prick on the top of the hand with a needle may just may produce a little dab of blood on the palm.
Reminds me I still may have Jesse's Pen Thru Anything lying around somewheres. PS: Hey there Mystician, nice to see you still around.

I know this is an old thread but. . .
. . .when I used to do this routine I had the volunteer write their chosen card on a piece of paper, which I then burned in a container (that had some old ash from previous burns). I made a point of "inhaling" the smoke from the burning paper to "get the essence in my body", which, of course, caused the name of the card to appear on my arm when the ashes on my skin combined with the essence in my body. It was a whole sympathetic magic/alchemy thing.
