Well, after much deliberation, I finally found someone to make the cups I've been wanting for years for my Civil War act...copper, Bosco style, unlacquered (so that they get that beautiful patina).

So tell us more These aren't actual Bosco cups, but your own? They got the Bosco style down perfect. Are you making more than one set? Height, Weight, etc.?

Just the one...they're 4.5 inches, copper, "Bosco-style"...Not sure about the weight, haven't received them yet.

Everyone was out of them. I tried to find them, but Harries, Trickery, and anyone else that carried them was completely out. Not to mention, I really wanted them unlacquered so that they'd 'patina' nicely!

In the future, if you want to remove lacquer from cups just use some paint/lacquer stripper. I have used it on a few sets of morrisseys and it works great.
Those are really nice cups you had made. Nothing better than something nobody else has. -todd

Thanks, Todd! I appreciate that!
Actually, I had them made by Tim Star. Bill Palmer recommended him and we did the whole deal by email. Rick

Those are lovely cups, Rick. Tim really pulled the stops out for you there.

I'd say, though, judging from the height in the photo and doing some math, that they're probably about 2.5 inches or so...I took the photo up in size so that the cups were 4.5, and the mouth measured out to be 2.5...probably a good guess. I can't wait to get them and start playing with them. I already have the routine worked up that I'm going to use, but it will be interesting to see what final loads I can use (turnips, potatoes, etc). Remember, I'm got these for a Victorian act, so I'm having to use things that would have been common to Southern planters and farmers in the Civil War (if I could just get an entire tobacco or cotton plant under there...!) Have you checked out the Dixie routine by Bauer? Might be able to pull something from there.

Tim probably used the Harries chucks to make these. He does some special work for Harries.
So they are probably the same size as the Bosco cups. Regarding removing lacquer -- there are some lacquers that are impervious to lacquer thinner and paint remover. One of them is Magipoxy. Another is catalyzed acrylic.

I'm thinking in terms of ending with three things soldiers were always trying to get their hands on: playing cards, a bag of tobacco, and coffee beans...

If you have the October 1994 issue of Genii magazine, check out the Punx routine. It was just a basic outline, but it was a really good idea.
