Hey, I'm new to fire magic, but would really like to get involved in it.
I've read through the first 7 pages of posts, and searched, but didn't find a post that sorta matched my questions/needs. What I want: I just want to do minor fire effects like fire productions (imagine roses/coins), or maybe throw small fireballs from 1 hand to the other (then doing a production in that hand). In presentation, I don't want to hold flash paper and cause it to light on fire, I want to make it seem like fire just appeared out of no where. However, I want everything to be very safe. I don't want to make my own flash paper, and I definitely don't want to mess around with anything explosive or anything that could accidentally hurt someone. So... my questions; I know its against the rules to reveal how things work, but for my safety hopefully someone can answer. How safe is flash paper? If I did the trick Fire Flight, but instead put the origami on my own finger and lit it, would that burn me (seems like a cooling ending)? How safe is throwing "fireballs" and if its an effect accomplished with flash paper. Finally, which type of igniter should I look into? I've look at The Igniter at Jim Pace's ebay store, but how does it compare to Flashpaper's Delight? thanks! |

Ummmm.
All fire is dangerous, I'm sure you knew that. Flash paper burns.

Well yes I know, but I just meant that I wanted to be as safe as possible, and avoid the things that are more dangerous than others, like I understand fire eating/breathing, or shooting out enormous jets of fire can be.
Was really looking for more of a helpful response rather than an obvious statement. I already know that lighting birthday candles next to a barrel of gun powder is a bad idea. |

Eh, okay.
You need to find someone who is willing to work with you one on one. that's really the only good way of learning to be safe, etc.

To produce the effect you want I'm sure you'll need to use flash paper, one way or another. I feel it's pretty safe. You might want to pick up a packet and test it out... it's really cool in a dark room. All you need to do is light it and let it go. So long as you treat your packet with respect you should be OK. Your local magic shop might have some small "brochure" type books on flash paper which can give you some suggestions in how to present it. I think it's called "FLASH PAPER TIPS". It's all pretty straight forward.
Also, in the book "The Professional's Guide to Fire Eating by Brian Brushwood" http://www.dube.com/book/ProFEBook.php?cc=fire Mr. Brushwood grades various types of fire eating from 1 ~ 10. An easy trick, like eating a match is rated at about 2 or 3 (I don't have my book in front of me). Any way, this book might help give you some perspective on playing with fire. Using Mr. Brushwoods system, I'd say flash paper rates about a 1 out of 10 on his danger scale. How difficult is it to drop a light match before it touches your fingers? Hope this helped |
