I've bought my first decent deck from ellusionist, and I've opted for the ghost.
though I personally enjoyed more the black ones, I suppose that as a spectator in magic, a black deck will look more suspicious to me, than a grayed out one. however, I'm strating to believe that the black ones might have an advantage. since I'm hoping to get a gaffed deck and a Svengali in the near future, I want to settle on a series first.. but I'm not sure which, yet. I read they have the same finish, and small differences in handling, so I suppose that's not such a big difference. however, thinking of double lifts (i don't know to do many, I know there's the standard one with a break - which I don't sympathise - and the push-off, which works better for me) I imagine that the corners of the black cards are harder to see - advantage for viper/tigers. what do you guys preffer and why? I haven't researched over other decks, but I'm sure there are more. if you know some nice ones, do add them in the post. andrei |

I prefer regular decks that spectators are accustomed to and I stay away from anything like ghosts or black. But that's just me.

I would worry about using a gaffed deck that looked really unusual. Some folks will want to examine the deck for "trick cards". This is far less likely with "regular" decks.
Some magicians have stated the opinion that they really want the magic to be about the magician and what he does, and not about the props. In order to do this, the props should be the least suspicious that they can be. Having said that, working/playing with different decks is certainly fun.

Go with good old Bicyles.
You just can't beat getting packs for less than $1.25 Plus you can use red or blue gaff cards with loaned decks. |

I agree with the others. People are used to see the ordinary decks and will get suspicious when you use something that looks strange to them. And most lay people have never even seen a ghost deck.
For flourishes and manipulation routines they might work well though. I have also noted that Bicycle cards now come in even more colors (I've seen lavender and purple) which could be used for some really cool color changes. But for 'regular' card effects I would go for the standard red or blue. What ever you decide, good luck! Tina |

Those special decks look cool and do have their place. But if you want to do card tricks, you need to take the suspicion away from the cards.
Most non-magical persons never saw a Ghost deck in their whole life. Andy

Most non-magical persons have never even seen "regular" Bicycles for that matter. Card playing is almost a thing of the past. When I was a child, card playing was a family event and we spent hours playing Rummy, Casino, Crazy Eights, Go Fish and other games. Today, is a different time with card games taking a back seat to other pursuits of entertainment such as video gaming, internet surfing, etc. The type/color of cards you use makes no difference in what your audience perceives. If someone is suspicious that you are using a gaffed deck then rest assure that he/she is a fellow magician because the non-magical person is ignorant and knows nothing about gaffed cards/decks.

The majority of those are bikes. I only use common decks such as bee or bikes and use red or blue backed. I did buy a tiger deck just to see what all the hype was about and the first three people I showed it to asked if it was a "magic" deck. If you are performing for very young kids, color probably does not matter as much. If you are performing for older kids and adults then stay with the red or blue backed cards. If someone sees a deck that they perceive as "different", they might not say much but, they will psychologically think that the deck is not normal. The use of normal decks will get past that for the most part. |

At several schools here they had to ban card playing during brakes because the kids would miss classes, play away all their money (and PS portables, laptops and pretty much everything else of value). The police are busting illegal poker clubs, and 'for fun' poker sets are selling like crazy. And the preferred card type? Bicycle... red or blue. And even if they don't use Bikes they still use red or blue decks. Try taking a Ghost deck or any other weird looking deck to a poker game and see if they want to play with you using your deck I remember when I bought some cheap packet tricks at one time. The tricks it self was not bad but the cards was rubbish! And some people was very skeptical simply due to the strange looking cards. Tina |

Even if they aren't suspicious, many folks are curious about the cards and will want to see them if they are unusual. I have a Ghost deck that I play around with and folks have stopped and asked me about the cards. I explain that the U.S. Playing card has started to make up all sorts of different decks, and this just one of them.

I'd wager if you went into most people's homes and asked for a deck of cards you'd be more likely to get an old souvenir deck they picked up on vacation, a promotional deck of some sort or a punched casino deck. The drug store racks have a wide variety of cards to offer, not even a quarter of them are Bikes. You've got cards with cartoon character backs, Hoyle's, Bee's, Mavericks, Aviators, the cheap floral backed bridge cards and the in house brand. The back design really doesn't matter. You could use pretty much anything you like as only magicians obsess over Bicycle brand backs. It's the faces that everyone is familiar with and when you start messing around with those is when it leads to confusion and suspicion. A regulation face, black or red pips on a white background is instantly recognizable. When you start reversing or removing the colours is when things start to look like a trick or gimmicked deck.

I've been to a few folks house that have had really high class cards, I think this is due to the poker craze. I've actually seen a few KEM arrow backs around since they were the cards used in the movie Rounders.

I always use red bikes, but if I had to choose between ghosts or tiger/vipers, I would go for the ghosts, I don't kno why but they feel much nicer, also try the Theory11.com Guardians, they are not bad.

The deck of ghost series cards I have don't have color pips on the face of the cards. In fact, the only color on the cards is in the index pip. Everything else is black.
Which means the seven of hearts looks an awful lot like the seven of spades. If it's confusing for me it's probably going to be confusing for the spectator. So I never realy use it. But then again, if you think about it as 52 different gaff cards with the color erased ...

I think you are referring to card games like that kids play (and as a kid I did play them but I don't know about if kids do it now) but as far as older people, so many people play poker now.. and of course everyone has seen bicycle.. Although now I bring my KEMs to poker games (probably a good idea knowing how easily I can cheat with bicycles now lol) |

Also that's pretty much THE card type sold in stores like walmart and target. I get my bicycles from walmart now since they have a two pack at the front of store near the registers for only $3. Some places charge over $3 for just ONE pack

Stay away from the "cool" decks. I got a tiger,a ghost and a viper because I liked the designs. I used them to create inerior decorations for my magic room. I never used them in performance. I saw some very well thought out XCM clips where this kind of decks were used.
as far as which ones I like most, I have to say the ghosts. I hate the tigers because they are thicker. I am not talking design now. -Matt

If you are looking for a deck from ellusionist, I suggest you get bicycle masters decks, I haven't used it yet. but it has been reviewed as one of the best decks ever, and it still looks normal.
Have you Amazed?
