Stevens Magic sells this, pentagram candle holder, five candles, the flame goes out on the dead persons card.

Anybody have this? Im wondering if it would be worth the $125.00

Also wondering if there would be high cost replacement items needed.

If this is from Borodins ' Final Curtain' ' then in reality you are paying for the props, candleholder and cards, which look amazing so if you want to pay $125 for that then do it... I picked final curtain up for $50 and it has much more than the one effect, its full of amazing effects and a great investment...

Borodin’s work and writing are fantastic and amazing!

That said, I do not like the look of these props,
the set appears too “slick” and “packaged”.

I think pre-printed cards and the sparking new look
take away from any mysterious or bizarre feel.

For a traditional magician the pentacles could be a
huge turn-off to conservative audiences.

Though it’s nice to see more bizarre stuff on the market,
the “neo-bizarre movement” has lost the creative reality
needed for props to have an emotional hook,
and become realistic in the spectators minds.

My two-cents,
Walt

Listen to Silvertongue.
Final Curtain book shows how to make your own effect, easy and more cheaper.

Hi:
Once was at a convention with tea lights at every table. I had been experimenting with various Borodin effects. At the conclusion of the evening I set up the necessary then gathered the readers around and did the business. It was strong.

Borodin's books are a must, anyway. Just like Chelman's and Baba's...

This is the opening effect of my seance in Houston. Bottom line is that for less than the fee of the Steven's prop, you can buy the book and several props that you can use that look more authentic as opposed to what I saw on Joe's site. This is my opinion! See below how I used Borodin's effect:

I used Borodin's effect with great success in my Seances in Houston. I used some tea light candle holders (Red Glass) that I purchased for 50 cents each! I have a purse from the 1800's ($30.00 at an antique shop)and I show five photos (4 x 6 old photos from the internet printed in photo paper and laminated) of women with "their names" at the bottom of each photo who may have owned the purse. I ask someone to hold the purse and the photos are then mixed face down by another spectator and laid out on the table. I then place a candle on the back of each face down photo and light the candles. I then ask for the spirit that once owned the purse to give us a sign. One candle extinguishes by itself as we wait for a sign (approximately one minute). I ask the spectator to open the purse and see what is inside. Inside is a piece of paper that says that the purse was once owned by "Margaret". The extinguised candle is removed from the photo and the photo is turned over revealing the photo of Margaret!

"Margaret" is the spirit that I contact in my seances and I use this opening to identify the spirit that we are trying to contact. This was performed many times over in the month of October and definitley is strong! You will not be dissapointed!

Go to stevensmagic.com to look at the $125 apparatus. It is under "Hot/New".

From the picture I would say the equipment looks a little too much like a magic trick. I do the regular Borodin routine using my business cards. You can get small wooden tea light candle holders at Cost Plus World Market. Walgreen's drugstores (or similar) have a bag of tea light candles for $3.

You can get a nice pentagram altar cloth at:
http://www.ladyhawkstreasures.com/smoke.htm
Look under "Ritual Supplies". I applied black heat-bonding fabric to the back of the altar cloth to give it more body.

These items look authentic, not like a manufactured trick.

I also considered using an altAr cloth with a star or pentagram but was afraid of having my seances associated with devil worshiping (lay audience opinions?). I think that this is a personal choice and is a better idea than the one offered by Steven's. Again, this is my opinion.

For an added touch of "authenticity", I use an EMF meter (K2) like the one used on Ghost Hunters on the Sci Fi channel, to kill the time needed for the candle to go out. I hold the meter in the air near the candles as I ask for the spirit that owns the purse to identify herself. At first, I do not get anything. I move around the area checking for a reading. After about 30 secods, the meter starts to get a reading! As I move closer to the table with the candles, the reading becomes stronger! Finally, a candle goes out as the meter is at it's highest reading!

This meter will cost you around $45.00 and then all you need is a wearable PK device to set the meter off! All these additional suggestions are still less than the total fee for the item on Steven's site but again, it is a personal choice.

Hope this helps!

Personally, I think part of our job is to educate people, althought I know many will disagree. In any case, the pentagram is not evil (hey, it's only a star). The inverted pentagram is thought by some to be evil, but even this is debatable. I think a pentagram altar cloth is a definite plus.

I like props, especially things like the altar cloth. You can get some really peculiar t-lite holders also. Why not make strange sigils and motifs yourself out of fimo? or the pentagram shaped t-lite holder out of simple branches strung together with hemp cord and the t-lites on each point?
I haven't tried this effect out but I will now, thanks to James for the motivation. BTW, I'm glad all went well in your seances, I just got through checking out your website and I applaud. great job done. good look for January...

I have never been concerned about my audience associating my show with witchcraft or devil worship. I have a small box of "witch's" paraphernalia that I demonstrate, and I invoke Satan's blessing to demonstrate that a witch's dress will not burn.

Some people will associate a seance with demonic forces, no matter what you use or do not use.

Thanks for the compliment Silvertongue! It was this forum that got me off my *** to present a seance. As I stated earlier, a lot of this is personal preferance. I do like the altar cloth but chose not to use it at this time. Educating your audiences is extremely important as to what the desired effect you are trying to convey is. In either case, some may love the Steven's prop while others like myself do not. I hope all of us have given rowdymagi5 something to think about. Whatever you decide will be best for you.
