Okay I may get beat up here, but to me Angela's performance lacked character, I think her presentation was great, naturally her appearance was appealing & her ability got her to 2nd place, but in the end I didn't feel she really connected. I know a little about her background & some of her personality through her comments here, but it just seemed like she could have connected better with her audience if that background would have came out more. I do not know, I could be wrong, BDC I would be interested in hearing your insight since you have worked with her closely in the past.

Also why not have a table there to put on? Why the floor. She wouldn't have to bend over to put it on a table.

I just think reality TV and the competition format has cheapend much art. Wouldn't it have been a lot better to see a series devoted to mentalism and various acts doing their thing the way they would normally?
I just think this "manufacturing" of mentalists for this rediculous format looks exactly like what it is. And a panel of judges? The audience is always the judge and we never saw any true mentalism on this series. It was all a load of BS...low production fast food. |

I would much rather have had her dressed in elegant cool, like Francis Willard, than the standard Bimbo Attire they slapped her in. I think she might have gracefully established a stronger personality with a better class of costume. Francis Willard's choice of dress is very strong and effective.

Unfortunately, mentalism shows aren't made for mentalists. I think Bavli (minus his stop sign stunt) or McCambridge should have won.
Angela's 'crying without tears' and 'mystical birthstone' antics put me off her character. Not to mention she resurrected a bad memory of a participant's father for her 'initials on leg' trick. It seemed in bad taste. I think they should have had bigger segments, and were allowed to form a short act. Anyone can do one-off stunts. A lot of the performers seemed a bit unsure of their angle; there was no consistency or reasoning offered for their abilities. Geller for example claims that his feats are solely 'Psychic powers' or Brown claims it's 'Psychological Influence' and delivers a full story to the audience. Quite a lot of the performers on Phenomenon just demonstrated what would be considered as an amazing series of coincidences, or lucky guesses. Hardly any considered the aesthetic of the fuller picture. If I had the money, I'd send them a copy of Absolute Magic each. |

But remember you have just three minutes James.
We all were complaining about the time constraints. When it came down to it I took the restrictions as a challange to create the biggest PR event possible. (As you will note it is still playing out) I was not allowed to do my real act but, was brought on to do medium type presentations I knew would only last one show. (Bags were allready packed) We all knew Angel would attack becouse of his ignorance. But it is really next to impossible to build depth in such a format. Jim Jim

I understand entirely Jim, and I admire the mileage you got out of your involvement with the show. You shone brighter than the winner and both 'judges'.
Phenomenon was about Jim Callahan vs Criss Angel. I usually have a strong knee-jerk reaction to 'psychic entertainment' - but I feel that your performance was morally fine - as you didn't involve anyone's dead relative, or do anything fraudulent. It was clearly a performance for the purposes of entertainment. And an enjoyable one at that. My comment relating to the lack of a full act was complaining about the structure of the show - and not a complaint of the performers. I think everyone did a stellar job given the circumstances of the format, and would have loved to have seen the show without the contest/judges reality gimmick. I stick by my original theory that Angela only got as far as she did because of the ever-decreasing dress. It sounds harsh, but there were at least 5 more entertaining performers than her. Overall though, it was much better than what's usually on TV. I'm glad to see our art back in the public mind, and I think all the performers did us well. |

I would agree with James Houston on most of what he wrote.
If you think she got to the finale and ALMOST won (and probably she had won if it were not for that Super guy) because of her effects being that strong, then I have to disagree or, at least, having doubts about that. I cannot see any of her effects being that strong. Actually Guy Bavli and Jan Bardi (just to name two of them) performed much stronger effects than her. And flawlessly, in my opinion. But then I did not care for her legs or for her giggling. I just watched the effects. I hear however that she may be an excellent magician and if so, my hat off to her. Sincerely. However, here, I'm talking about her performances as a Mentalist on Phenomenon only. And I understand that she may have had the producers change things for her at the last moment, But that also happened to some other participant (she has even said that herself in her interview).

Let me also state that my opinions on Angela are solely based on Phenomenon. I've not seen any of her past work, or read any interviews. As I said, my main critique of the show was that the producers created a structure that wasn't entirely suited to mentalism. Given these circumstances, the performers did very well.
I agree that Jan Bardi had one of the most original performances in the series. Well, I didn't recognise it anyway. |

Think of yourselves when you first started off.... she is a yougnin' with a ton of potential who if she plays her cards right (and she is an excellent Cardician) in a few years your fears will likely be dispelled.

Sorry, at least with me the comparison is flaked. I did not start as a magician.
And, Doc, I did not tell anything about her future. You think she has great potential? Fine by me. I personally did not like her on Phenomenon. Hopefully this is not so hard to accept for some of you, and, if it is, I can live with that.

By Paolo - your a mentalist - you gotta use your Prediction Powers!
I didn't start off as a magician or mentalist... and I'm still neither Also, none of us started off as a woman either (as far as I know...) Oh, and I am agreeing with you re: AF's performances on Phenom - but I also revel in the fact that I knew despite any of that she would finish in the final two. And as I will say again, Phenom was not a show about mentalism! Paolo, it will be up to the Mystery Mentschen to design and launch such a beast.

I don't know how you started, Doc.
I know how I did. And the "gender" thing does not make any difference (and if it does - it works BOTH ways. Against and FOR!) As to Phenomenon not being a Mentalism show... well, by now we all know that. BUT regardless of that, there were a few strong performances of Mentalism (or potentially strong, if a different timeframe was allowed). And, guess what, none of them was a performance by Angela Funovitz.

That is true - I still think we are both agreeing... as far as I can tell! Oh, and I am not sating she will develop into a mentalist if that is what might be unclear...

The female Mentalist I prefer is a certain Sue, part of a duo.
She performs, by the way, among other things, a very choreographic version of the Georgia Magnet stunt. And If I am remembering correctly, the late Eddie Fields was one of her teachers. I envy Greg Arce because he is friend with her. I hope sooner or later he will introduce me to Sue.
