Coin magic would be a great add on to my magic repertoire. I love sleight of hand, but am not interested in fake coins, coin boxes, or the Matrix. What would be the best tricks, videos, or books to get on this topic? =)

Dan has a good breakdown there. It would be a great place to start.

Apply yourself - don't buy too many gimmicks right off the bat. learn the boundaries of what is possible in the raw. The guys I know that did it this way had a leg up on me when I was starting out.

I would first go get David Roth coin magic DVD's 1 thru 3. If my memory severs me it has no gimmicks. You learn the basics and go from there.

Bobo's Modern Coin Magic is considered by many (most?) to be the best book for coins.

I'd get the Roth DVDs and stick with that for the first year...

Get Kaufmann's Coin Magic or his Complete Richard's Almanac. I don't know of a greater source for a wide variety of moves and routines. You'll be studying the greatest in the field of coin magic (ex. Latta, Roth, Gallo, etc.).

As has been mentioned already, the first book that is a must is Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. This along with Michael Ammars introduction to coin magic DVD and David Roths DVD's will get you off to a great start.

If coin sleight of hand is your goal, start small and eat the elephant one bite at a time. Tackle the fundamentals first and use it as a foundation. When you're comfortable with that stuff, move to something more challenging. But don't get too anxious and bust your knuckles on stuff, until you've mastered the fundamentals. Just my opinion, but I would classify the fundamentals as:
1. Palms (classic, thumb, and finger) 2. False Transfers 3. Switches (utility switch, and bobo switch) 4. Vanishes (take your pick; there are a ton) If you are comfortable with the stuff above, I would say you have a foundation to start challenging yourself more. These are just the opinions of an amateur, moderately-skilled coin guy, who is losing his hair. There are far more advanced and experienced gentlemen on this site than me. Gaffed coins are great, and I have my share, but learning what you need with regular coins is a ton of fun, and it gives you the confidence to know you are "ready" anytime, anywhere. Down the line, you can throw in the gaffed stuff to your existing sleight of hand, and a whole new world opens up. Have fun. Good luck! |
