Does anyone have an opinion on Boris Wild brand versus the Ultimate brand of marked decks?

Both too expensive to use regularly... Besides Wild system is slow cos you have to scan the backs of the cards.

Is there a brand whose markings can be seen from 2-3 feet away?

I always use the Ted Lesley deck, and love it. Having said that, however, I think the Ultimate Marked Deck is potentially better, but is too expensive for me to give up the Lesley deck.

I don't know about Wild's deck being slow. He can literally run his finger along a spread and find a certain card by the time he finishes the scan. It is pretty easy to read, and if I had younger eyes I would be using it. I need to have reading glasses on in order to read the marks.
You can do all sorts of things with a memorized makred deck. That way you don't have to see the card selected, you can look at the one before or after and know what the card is.

I have the Boris Wild and I will agree with Marty. Once you have some practice the markings almost jump out at your eye.
Kirk Charles' book "Marked for Life" has a Farmarx marked deck you can make yourself in under an hour. I believe he also has a hybrid of the Farmarx called "Farmchas" Which combines the Farmarx with a Lesley type marking system. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the comments. They were helpful.
Although I'm sure a marked deck has many uses, and I'll get a book or two about them, my initial desire is to use a marked deck in those mental-selection tricks in which a spectator must first name her card before you turn over your prediction card. There's a Ralph Hull trick in Giobbi's section on turnovers that uses this concept. I've seen others as well, such as a good one in an Alton Sharpe book that involves having two cards selected, one mentally and one physically. But it's inherently suspicious that the spec must name her card before you go through various machinations and ultimately reveal your prediction card. I thought I'd ask the spec to locate her mentally selected card in a deck and put it face down on the table, the motive being that she's now committed to that card; she can't forget it, or change her mind, or lie (I'd have to find a polite way to phrase that). A marked deck will let me know the spec's card without her saying its name out loud. So I need to see the markings from across a coffee table, for example. |

I use the Ultimate deck for only one trick and only after I've done a couple of things with a regular deck. I like that I can see the marks with just a glance, even with bifocals.
Although some think the marks are too brazen, I've not once been busted. |

How far away can you discern the markings on the Ultimate deck? Conversely, are they so evident that you wouldn't use the deck for ordinary tricks because a spectator might notice the markings?

I like the Farmarx and use that for marked deck effects. I can see the markings from 3 feet away pretty easily. Some will argue about how easy they are to been by spectators, but I have found them to work for me.
Eric, send me an e-mail about this, and I will give you more of my 2-cents. RevJohn |

I don't think a layperson would detect the markings if the deck isn't overused, but since the deck won't pass the riffle test shuffling could become a problem. |

Boris Wild says he uses the marked deck for everything he does. He claims that it gives him a tremendous degree of control over things. He even uses it when he forces a card. One really nice bit occurs when someone lies, or mis-remembers their card. He asks, what was your card, quickly scans for the cord controls it then palms it off and reveals that it is in his pocket, or wallet, so how could that have been your chosen card?

Thanks for the comments. So, just to be clear, are users of the Boris Wild brand saying the marks can be read from 2-3 feet?

This is one of the great things about actually going to a magic shop. If you are really serious about magic, they will let you look at a marked deck so that you can see for yourself. The ability to rea what's on the back of a card really depends on your eyesight. At two feet, it's right at the edge where I need to wear glasses (I use reading glasses) and I can read some of the cards, but others are difficult to see. Closer really requires glasses for me.
So find a magic shop, convince then that you are earnest, and look and see if you can read the deck. If you can, you are all set, otherwise your quest continues.

If you need to read marks on a deck which is farther than arms length (2-3 feet)....then I suggest using a Juiced deck or Luminous. Both these technologies were designed to be read from a distance.
Juice and luminous may be read from2 feet to 8+ feet away depending upon how large you make the marks. Juice will require practice to read and luminous is easier because the filtered sunglasses do the work for you Generally, a distance of 2-6 feet is most common and best to read Juice or luminous marked cards.

Thanks again. Marty, your point about magic shops is well taken. But I live in Alaska. I'm 900 miles from Seattle and I'm not even on the interstate road system. It would cost me $600 to fly there to buy a $20 deck.
Maybe I'll buy a book about marked decks and look into the topic some more. |

I do a lot of effects with the Boris Wild marked deck and I havew no problems reading the cards.I can read them when there on a table and I'm standing or when the spectator takes it from the deck and looks at the face.Depending on your eyesight you shouldn't have a problem with 1-3 feet. Its just a mattetr of practise as well.
Hope this helped Dan
