It depends. I did it because I wanting to try with three different objects.
Not to mention, Bobser, that with only three objects you can simultaneously smash two items and leave THE ONE untouched... However that's a personal choice one has to make and certainly Luke's use of Dunninger's principle is something very, very clever.

Two objects is perfect. This is an opener. It's short, focused, and intense. There is just the right amount of time to build tension and that one slam, executed and timed correctly, brings that tension to a perfect climax. Then the reveal and the buzz from the audience is just great for an opener that establishes who and what you are all about. Three objects is one too many.

Please, no rules Derek.
That's your idea and is fine. But I have said FOR ME, while you are speaking as an absolute. Give me credit. I have enough experience to know if something may work or not. Plenty of people open with sets of four or five objects, btw.

Paolo, I hold your expertise in very high regard and you have my greatest respect. I should have also inserted some sort of indication that my statement was one of a personal opinion. I would not try and preach to a fellow 'worker', especially one that gives so much to the community.
So, for clarification, my statement was just my take on the way Jermay has constructed the routine. I can see where he's coming from and like it a lot. I use two objects because I believe using more becomes repetitive and predictable (the audience gets the gist of what will happen after the first crush.) I see no advantage of crushing two at once over just crushing one, but this is just my opinion. As an opener I like to keep this short and sweet. The slam is quick and loud and unexpected and hits the audience hard. Repetition would loose that shock factor. Revealing the knife after this (almost violent act) produces that OMG!!...WOW!!! reaction from the audience. Just my thoughts (hope that clears things up Paolo ) Derek |

Yeah both you guys know what you're talking about, that's not an issue. But in this particular case, having tried and tested both, including sensing the audience reactions, I'm with kinesis (for ME personally).

I'm not saying that I prefer one presentation over another, but I will say that Jermay's routine is directly about 50/50 odds (the coin flip, the two bags).
Adding any more objects changes the very idea behind the presentation; it becomes something else. |

I have tried different versions and have used Dangerous Opener (with a personal twist) for 4 stage shows this week. I have not used the Dunninger method with my routine. My routine involves a prediction. I realize some will prefer using several cups/bags/tubes.
I like a quicker version personally because I am short on time with my shows. I also like the safety net Dangerous provides me. In the audience eyes, I have a 50 percent chance of getting it wrong. Just a FYI, this week with women helpers, it is 50/50 on colors chosen. Two have chose Red and two Blue.

I use women helpers if at all possible. I also use Purple and Blue. I'd say I get around 70% purple.

Women like those colours so that is a good choice. They also like ponies

Purple and Blue, interesting Kinesis. I wear a red vest (hides the blood if anyone ask::) I like the 70 percent. Too early to tell for me (red and blue) but I truly love this effect.
I try to pick women for most of my effects on stage. I will use a guy now and then just to mix it up or do something like RO's Test Condition II (and they still try to upstage me usually)

Plan on adding blood to palm (ashes to palm but different color) for this effect soon. Hypnotic suggestion angle. Really like this one, thanks Jeremy!

Many moons ago Joe Givan sold a device that deposits the "blood" prior to loading ( if you catch my drift) wont go into details but it was a nice piece of inexpensive kit.

DOing this often now but without the Dunninger nuiance. So far, the blue bag is chosen much more then the Red. I plan on now switching the spike.
I reveal there is a spike once the spectator comes up with me. I may change to a no reveal and see how the reactions are to compare.

The two examples in this clip aren't of Dangerous Opener (they both use multiple cups) but they do show you what happens when it goes wrong.

I absolutely love the effect, but I despise the magician's choice. The "reverse magician's choice" is a little bit better because you are committed to the selection, but when the incorrect selection is made, the effect takes a blow no matter what. I wanted another out, so I made one. I don't use cups or tubes either, I use stuffed animals (red and blue). One of the stuffed animals (The red one) has a knife pointing up inside it; which is not visible from the audience. The objects are casual enough for this to be turned into a non-event (or a lesser event), since I will use the stuffed animals for a random spectator selection. To begin, the major difference in my presentation is the use of a written prediction, which is in a special envelope and in full view of the audience the entire time. I begin the show by explaining that there is something in the envelope that I've put there to motivate a particular choice.
If the spectator chooses the "safe" toy, no problem - smash away. If they choose the red toy, here is my out: "I'd like to call your attention to the painting to your left. (It's a painting of a red rose with the word CHOOSE underneath) Those of you well versed in influential psychology will notice the patterns. Here's something interesting. The eye is drawn to color and the mind associates. Now, for the first time Jackie please tell them which color you picked? RED. Now, we have a painting of a red rose with the words choose. The nearest object of significant color is another red object. Now I did have a 50 / 50 chance and those are pretty good odds, but I wouldn't bet my show on it and it certainly wouldn't work every time if this were the case. I just think it's interesting that most people tend to go for the red one with this particular setting. (This becomes a non-event)" I then use the prediction envelope with 2 possible outcomes. One is a letter that the spectator will read to me, the other is a picture of a skull and crossbones. The envelope contents are then read by the spectator out loud in the style of "Dan: I went for the red one because my eyes were drawn from left to right, etc etc etc." I then have the spectator take the safe (blue) stuffed animal and toss it into the audience for the "first effect", (This becomes the reason for bringing her up on stage.) Under the pretense of "Let me show you what effect the color blue has on the human psyche", I have her toss out the blue (safe) plushie. Later, when I pick another spectator, I steal the knife from the red stuffed animal and joke about tossing it into the audience. Both plush toys end up clean in the end. I love this because either way, all props are used and nothing is wasted. On the reverse side of the scroll is a picture of a RED skull and crossbones. In the event that the spectator chooses the safe toy, I announce that I will smash whichever toy they choose. I turn the red plushie sideways to reveal the knife as I carefully remove it. I will then draw attention to the envelope and the reason for her avoiding the danger - through intuitively picking up on where the dangerous item was hidden. I ramble on about associating the symbol for danger to the color red and that she picked up on the hidden signals very well. I realize it's not as simple as the original but I find it suits my style. Flames and praise are both welcome. Enjoy, - Dann http://www.danielnormandeau.com |

I use to use the choice also, never did me any good. Im still with Coral Fang and prediction for my opener and it has gone very well. It sets up my entire show. I never tell them a spike is involved.
Nice routine there Dann.

Being a bit nervous about Jermay's method, I worked up a little script for this one. Instead of bags, there are two vertical tubes of wrapping paper made to look like presents. They get to choose the present they want. The other will be eliminated. I just don't tell them ahead of time how they get to "open" their present or how the other will be "eliminated". (A little of Max Maven's Equivoque).
Don't get me wrong, Luke Jermay's use of Dunninger's principle is absolutely brilliant, and I'd like to perform it that way, but at this early stage in my magic career, I don't know if I have the guts to pull it off. |
